Deadline for getting entry forms to the fair office for the upcoming county fair is June 30. So, you’ve still got a little time. Don’t be shy about it, go get a fair book, pick out your favorite category and go for it.
Every year we look forward to seeing old and new faces at the fair. Our baked goods department is especially easy for first time exhibitors. Can you bake a cake? Make a batch of cookies? You’ve got a chance for a blue ribbon. The fair theme this year is “We’ve Got a Good Thing Growing”. And the fair book is full of good things to try if you’re in the market for fun and blue ribbons. One of the most enjoyable departments is the Open Class Flower Show, organized and chaired by the Master Gardeners of Clark County. As always they will be awarding ribbons in the Senior and Junior divisions; with over 80 classes to enter, you are sure to have success. This year the Master Gardeners will hold a workshop to help you get ready for the fair. “Blue Ribbon Blooms- Secrets of Flower Show Success” will be held on Saturday, June 4, 2011 from 9a.m. to noon. For more information and to register call 937-521-3860 (Cost is $5.00 per person) A very popular contest open to all Clark County residents is the Pick of the Garden Bouquet Contest held on Homemaker’s Day, Thursday, July 28, 2011. Follow the rules in the fair book for entering. This year the Master Gardeners are using old sayings for themes. You’ll find flower arrangements under: Money Doesn’t Grow On Trees, Put Your Best Foot Forward, Give Them an Inch and They’ll Take a Mile, Mighty Oaks from Little Acorns Grow, and Too Many Cooks Spoil The Broth. Speaking of Cooks, back in our baked goods department there are a couple of new categories. The most interesting one is Ugly Cake. Even though it will only be judged on appearance and not included in the Best of Show entries, it will take some doing to make a cake unfit enough to win Ugly. (See exhibitor rules for this and other baked goods entries, fair book page 65.) Great tasting Ugly Cakes have been around a long time. Ugly it was though, and more than one groan of “How could you mess up a box mix?” was heard. It’s very sweet and rich with cream cheese and butter. Other variations include drained fruit cocktail, apples and raisins and even bananas. Some called it the Ugly Duckling Cake. Anyway you want to look at it, ugly is as ugly tastes and this one is pretty good with a big scoop of your favorite ice cream or piled high with fresh strawberries. Ugly Cake 1 butter cake mix 1 stick soft butter 3 eggs 1 (16 ounce) box powdered sugar 1 stick soft butter 1 (8 ounce) softened cream cheese Mix cake mix, eggs and 1 stick butter. Spread into a 9 x 13 greasedand floured baking pan. Mix powdered sugar, butter and cheese. Spread over top of batter. Bake 350 degrees for about 50 minutes.
