coats for kids 004

Enon Girl Scout Autumn Taylor is collecting garments to keep local children warm this winter as part of her Silver Award project.

Taylor, 14, said she learned of the Enon and New Carlisle communities’ need for children’s hats, gloves, and coats through a local church, which told them that the demand for youth coats was very great.  Taylor also volunteers at Enon Emergency Relief and food pantry, and noted that there were at least 40 families who utilize the pantry each week, saying that these families were also likely in need of coats for the younger members of their family.

Taylor has been involved in scouting since she was just four years old.  By completing this Silver Award project, she will earn the Girl Scout Cadette’s highest achievement.  Silver Award projects are designed to bring about a positive change in the scout’s community, and Taylor hopes to provide children in the New Carlisle and Enon areas with clothing warm enough to see them through the winter months.

New and gently used coats, hats, and gloves for babies, toddlers, school-aged children, and teens are needed, especially garments for young children and infants, Taylor said.  These items may be dropped off at several local stores in Enon including Pappy’s Place, Howard’s IGA, Enon United Methodist Church, and the Enon Library.  Drop-off locations in New Carlisle include the New Carlisle Library and the New Carlisle IGA.  All garments will be cleaned before being made available for pickup.

Taylor will distribute her collected coats this coming Monday, September 21, and Thursday, September 24 at the Enon United Methodist Church from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m.  In New Carlisle, the items will be distributed on Wednesday, September 23 at the New Carlisle Library from 2 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.  No proof of need is required to obtain a coat, gloves, or hat, but Taylor just asks that the child be present.

Donors may drop off items until Sunday, September 20 at 9 p.m., at which time, they will be collected.
