Clark County residents who have counted on The Humane Society Serving Clark County for many years are now left without a place to surrender their pets for adoption.

An update to their web page following the sudden resignation of shelter coordinator Krissi Hawke states “Our shelter IS NOT accepting owner-released animals (dogs or cats) and IS NOT offering owner-requested euthanasia services at this time”.

The board of directors gives no reason for the sudden end of services that animal owners in the county have come to rely on. They also indicate in their statement they only have 29 dog kennels and a cat room.

The statement goes on to urge those looking to adopt to visit the shelter and to look for events around the region including PetSmart on Saturdays. This is a major change as the shelter consistently shared the photos of adoptable pets on Facebook on a regular basis leading to an adoption rate of about 80% based on views and shares of the popular social media site.

By ceasing to accept owner release animals, the indication is that the number of strays are filling the shelter and adoptions have indeed slowed due to the lack of full time staffing at the shelter. The board of the Humane Society was put on notice at their recent board meeting that if the shelter fills to capacity, they would lose their contract with the county which provides more than 50% of the funding from the dog and kennel fund.

The county could not be reached for comment on the current situation. When services are discontinued for owner release, the number of strays and abandoned animals often increases in a community.

Concerns raised by volunteers at the June 23 meeting of the board included the loss of the person responsible for the euthanasia program that helped low income pet owners to provide humane and loving services to their elderly and critically ill animals.
