At the August 27, 2015 meeting of the Bethel Township, Miami County Zoning Commission Meeting, the commission approved a rezoning request by Emma Underwood of 6665 US 40 for the properties at 6665 and 6659 US 40 from B-1 General Business to R-1AAA Single Family Residential. Underwood made the request to align the properties with their current use. The properties were used as an antique business 20 years ago, but have been used as a resident since then. The Underwoods are in the process of selling the property and wanted to ensure that the property was zoned appropriately before the sale.

The Bethel Township Trustees must approve the zoning for the rezoning request to be finalized. The sale of the property is pending that final approval. In order to expedite the rezoning and complete the sale, Jeff Green, Planning and Zoning, requested that Underwood formally request that the public hearing on the rezoning and final ruling occur at the same trustee meeting. The meeting is scheduled for September 8, 2015 at 7:00 p.m.

The property was originally built in 1865 and served as the first tavern in Miami County. In addition, stagecoach drivers used the Gingerbread cottage located at 6659 US 40 for lodging as they traveled their routes. In later years, the cottage was used as the Brandt Post Office.

The next meeting of the Bethel Township Zoning Board is tentatively scheduled for September 24, 2015 at 7:00 p.m.
