The Tecumseh Council Boy Scouts of America is inviting every boy to join a local Cub Scout program.

The annual “School Night to Join Scouting” campaign begins this August and will continue through the fall. Each boy that signs up will receive a free rocket kit. They can build their rocket and blast it off during a Halloween event held at Camp Birch in Yellow Springs on October 10. Elementary school-age boys in the area will be invited to join at their school the following “School Night to Join Scouting” dates.

Enon Elementary Thursday, 9/10 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Indian Valley Thursday, 9/17 from 6 to 8 p.m.

The Boy Scouts of America is the largest youth-development program in the nation. There are more than three million registered youth members in the B.S.A., and more than 3,500 in the Tecumseh Council.

Boys and parents or guardians who cannot make the designated “School Night” can contact their local Scout Office about registration information. For more information call the Tecumseh Council at (937) 325-6449 or visit their web site at www.tecumsehcouncilbsa.org.

Ninety-five percent of parents whose sons are Cub Scouts believe Scouting develops character, and teaches moral and ethical values, according to an independent study. Louis Harris & Associates, an international research firm, recently published, “A Year in the Life of a Cub Scout . . . Boy Scout . . . Venturer.” The survey identified specific benefits gained from the Scouting program. Some key findings from the Harris study include:

• 89 percent of parents said Cub Scouting encouraged their son to stay away from drugs.

• 75 percent of parents said Cub Scouting encourages reading with their sons.

• More than 95 percent of parents said Cub Scouting teaches their son respect for the feelings of others, how to get along with others, and social skills dealing with how to treat others.

Boy Scouts who were surveyed strongly suggested that the organization’s core values of religious faith, personal integrity, and patriotism are conveyed in the program. A strong majority (74 percent) of Boy Scouts agreed that “Scouting helps me tell the difference between right and wrong.”

Boys sixth grade and older can join the Boy Scout program. Boys and girls 14 years of age or through the eigth grade can join the Venture Crew program. For information call the Scout Office at 937-325-6449.
