Spring is an exciting time in education as we get to witness the success of a year of teaching and learning. Seeing our students achieve their goals and move on to the next stage is bittersweet for any teacher, especially as we celebrate the end of our time with the graduating class. With many of our graduating seniors, we’ve witnessed their growth from excited five-year-olds ready to start kindergarten to outstanding young adults ready to take on the world.

At the Clark County Educational Service Center, the Clark County Board of Education and our staff are privileged to help celebrate several of our graduating seniors in the spring. It is an honor to recognize the accomplishments of some of our outstanding graduates each year and we look forward to celebrating with members of the Class of 2017 in the coming months.

Around the state of Ohio, educational service centers have the opportunity to recognize a senior from our county through the Franklin B. Walter Award. This year’s winner from Clark County is Northwestern Senior Rachel Martin, daughter of Greg and Deb Martin. The Franklin B. Walter Scholarship Awards Program was established by the Ohio Superintendent’s Educational Service Center Association to promote student achievement and recognize outstanding students. A senior from each county within the state of Ohio receives the award annually. I look forward to attending the Walter Award Banquet with Rachel and her family later this month to honor her achievements as a high school student.

The ESC also has the privilege each year of choosing students planning to pursue a career in education or a related field for the Mervin Britton Scholarship. Mervin Britton, a thirty-three year veteran of the education field in Clark County, established a trust through Security National Bank to support students who would attend a four-year university or college to receive training in teaching or related education fields such as speech and hearing therapy or physical therapy. Last year, we were able to help support six Clark County students in their educational journey through one of these scholarships. The 2017 Mervin Britton scholarships will be awarded later this spring.

In June, we will welcome the top students from each of our public schools in Clark County to the Excellence in Education awards. Each of the students selects a teacher who influenced them to honor at this event. We enjoy each year the opportunity to celebrate some of the top young people coming out of our county and the teachers who have inspired them.

Education can often be a challenging job, but those challenges are matched by the rewards of seeing our young people achieve their goals. The Clark County Educational Service Center is proud to be a partner in helping our schools support and educate students in the county and to join their parents, family, friends and community in celebrating their success.
