At the February 7, 2017 meeting of the Pike Township Trustees, the Road Superintendent Robert Miller reported that he had received a quote for $2500 to repair a garage door that broke. The quote included the cost of two bottom panels for the door plus labor. The trustees approved the quote and directed Miller to proceed with the repairs.

Miller also reported that his crew has been making repairs to the cracks on the township roads when the temperatures are above freezing. The township maintains 58 miles of roadway.

In addition, Miller received a call from a bus driver at the school that several feeder calves were dumped on Addison-New Carlisle. The road department disposed of the carcasses.

In addition, Miller asked Fiscal Officer Cheryl Sigler for a list of the line items for the road district. Sigler will provide the information to him at the next meeting.

The trustees approved a bid for $1,738 from True Quality to spray weeds in the township right of way around telephone pole, guard rails, and signs.

Webmaster Roger Manemann reported that he applied grant from the Zika Fund to cover the cost of the disposal of dumped tires along the township roads. The tires hold standing water that are an excellent medium for mosquito breading.

For the Fire Department, Fire Chief Jerry Donnelly updated the trustees that he has begun the process of getting quotes to replace a truck and other fire equipment scheduled for replacement in 2018.

He also asked the trustees for counselling services for first responders who respond to an accident, fire, or other call in which a death was involved. The trustees said that such services would be made available for the crews.

Assistant Fire Chief Chad McKay added that he had hired two new firefighters. The station is now covered fulltime with the exception of two day shifts. He also reported that he applied for a grant from the Bureau of Workman’s Compensation to purchase a Stryker Cardiac Assist device, which is a mechanical device that performs the physical component of CPR. The device reduces injuries to Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Personnel. The department has also applied for a grant to purchase EMS software.

In addition, McKay added that the department has made 55 runs so far this year, which is a significant increase over last year’s volume.

In other business, Trustee James Davidson reported that he had attended the Officers Meeting of the Fire Department and requested that the McKay attend those meetings as well. He said, “It is a higher priority for him to attend the Officers Meeting than the Township Meeting. I believe this would help with communication among the staff.”

For Planning and Zoning, Zoning Director Jason Bishop reported that the township would conduct training on zoning regulations for the Zoning Board on February 8, 2018 to ensure that the board members understand all the zoning regulations.

The trustees approved the advertising for chip and seal bids for 2017 paving projects. The bids are due in the township office by March 7, 2017.

The next meeting of the Pike Township Trustees is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. on February 21, 2017 at the Pike Township Garage.
