Lady Bird Johnson once said, “Perhaps no place in any community is so totally democratic as the town library. The only entrance requirement is interest.”

The Friends of the New Carlisle Public Library (Friends) strive to make our library not only a place of democracy where everyone is welcome, but also provide learning opportunities for all that enter its doors.

The Friends formed in the 2000 to engage library patrons, the community, and organizations interested in books in programs and services and that support the library and encourage literacy. In 2001, the group obtained incorporation from the State of Ohio and registered their 501c(3) status with the IRS as a non-profit organization.

Throughout their history, the organization has provided support to the library. Their first project was to pay to micro-film 1800 copies of The New Carlisle Sun newspaper dating back to the early 1900’s.

In addition, when the library needed to expand, the Friends helped to purchased the doctors’ offices next door to the library. When the purchase was complete, the Friends signed the deed over to the library at which time the loan was forgiven. The Library Trustees then proceeded with expansion of the library as it is today.

At the same time, The Friends also purchased the sign at the front entry to the parking lot off Lake Ave.

The Friends haves also purchased a wood storage shed to store books donated for book sales, a bicycle rack for the kids coming to the library on bicycles, and computers and bookcases.

Their main financial support is to provide funding for the Children’s Library and the Summer Reading Program.

Their most recent project for the library was to pledge money to replace the carpet in the adult section of the Library. They also sold 4” squares of carpet for $4.00 to raise money for the carpet fund at the their book sales.

For several years the Friends sponsored a Letter to Santa during Christmas time. Children would write letters to Santa and mail them at the Library. Members of the Friends would respond with a letter from Santa.

Currently, the Friends sponsor two book sales a year to raise funds for their projects to support the library. There is a spring sale in April and a fall sale in October. The Friends also maintain an ongoing sale of books at the library circulation desk. Recently, this area was reorganized to make it easier to find books, and to make the area more attractive. Hardback books can be purchased for 50¢ apiece , paperbacks for 25¢, and DVDs for $2.00.

June Fry, President of the Friends of New Carlisle Public Library said, “I’ve always loved books and being around the library.” If you feel the same way, consider joining the Friends. Membership costs $5 for an individual, $10 for a family and $25 for businesses and organizations The rewards far outweigh the small donation by providing the opportunity to spread democracy, literacy, and learning to our community. Application forms may be picked up at the circulation desk.

The Friends meet the second Thursday of each month at 1:00 p.m. .
