NC Kennels 024Daughter maintains family’s kennel business after mother’s breast cancer diagnosis.

Sarah Roswell’s decision to step up and take over her family’s business was made in an instant, and motivated less by desire than loyal daughterly love. Roswell’s mother Valerie, who had operated New Carlisle Kennels since 1994, also made an abrupt decision to step away from the business last September upon learning that she had breast cancer.

While Valerie has fortunately recovered, Sarah still continues day-to-day operations at their location on West National Road next to the Bethel Township garage, doing everything from bathing and boarding to grooming.

Sarah and her team were quite busy last Friday as we visited, clipping, scrubbing, and snipping away at dozens of furry clients who came for a style and a trim. Her employees Ashley and Erica moved efficiently between the pampered pooches, getting down to business while pausing for some puppy lovins’. Sarah’s dogs Jake and Beau ran around the shop with a few of the other “regular” customers, including Earl the orange cat, who was dropped off there when he was just a kitten.

The Roswells said that since Valerie’s departure from the business, they’ve been hearing more and more that their longtime clients are under the impression they had closed down. Sarah said the business relies on regular customers, so much that she has been reaching out to those she hasn’t heard from in awhile.

Valerie said that in the last few years under her operation, she found herself strapped for resources as she was doing everything by herself, and cut the hours of operation to run only through the week. Sarah said she understands that some of those clients are only available on weekends, and has since expanded her hours to include two Saturdays per month, and intends to open every Saturday soon. She said she has spent time looking for those weekend customers and contacting them to let them know that hours have once again resumed and that she hopes to see them back soon.

The business truly is a family affair, as Sarah’s father Rod runs the boarding.

“He spoils the dogs,” said Valerie of her husband.

Sarah said the dogs boarded there are given indoor/outdoor kennels so that they can come in and out as they please, as well as being taken outside to run in the yard several times per day.

Much to the delight of pet-parents, the Roswells also offer a place for dogs to spend the day while their owners are at work.

Sarah said they don’t turn away any breeds, and welcome all sizes, including bully breeds. She said they also offer breed-specific grooming for those breeds that require a little extra attention.

New Carlisle Kennels is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., and open two Saturdays per month as well, but call for more details. The Roswells can be reached by calling 845-0905 or 543-6086.
