Deputies VS Firefighters 033Cops and firefighters faced off in a softball game at the Enon VFW on Saturday afternoon to support the Pink Ribbon Girls and local women currently battling breast cancer.

Members of the Mad River Township Fire and Association played the men and women from the Clark County Sheriff’s Office and Springfield Police Division, with the law enforcement officers beating the firefighters.

Mad River Township Deputy Jeff Wise proposed the idea to the Fire Association last month, noting that all proceeds would go to the Pink Ribbon Girls, headquartered out of Tipp City. Michellle Speas of Pink Ribbon Girls said that the organization began in 2003, but really expanded in 2012. Since then, Speas said they have assisted over 500 women battling breast cancer, following their motto that “no one travels this road alone.”

Speas said that Pink Ribbon Girls offers assistance to ladies fighting breast cancer through housecleaning services, peer support, transportation to medical appointments, and meals for the women and their families. She said that they served over 35,000 meals in 2014, and are expected to serve 50,000 by the end of 2015.

Speas said that expansion is partly due to the organization’s expansion to support women with all reproductive cancers including cervical and endometrial as well as breast cancer. Pink Ribbon Girls is funded primarily through third-party donations and fundraisers such as the Saturday’s softball game. The organization receives no federal funding, and a portion of the earnings from the pink breast cancer license plates.
