The New Carlisle Public Library will feature a movie matinee on Saturday, December 5, 2015 at 2:30 p.m. The movie, Christmas Candle, stars Hans Matheson as David Richwood, a minister in the village of Gladbury. According to legend, every 25 years an angel visits the village candle maker and touches a single candle. Whoever lights this candle receives a miracle on Christmas Eve. The centuries old legend may end when the progressive minister Richmond attempts to teach the villagers a new formula for miracles through good deeds and acts of kindness. Richmond’s mission to modernize Gladbury puts him in conflict with the candle maker; however, he finds an ally in the beautiful Emily Barstow played by Samantha Barks. While the tempestuous candle maker fights to preserve the heritage, the candle goes missing. Miracles and humans clash in the most surprising Christmas the village of Gladbury has seen.

In addition, the library will feature Miracle on 34th Street at 2:30 p.m. on December 19. Miracle on 34th Street features a nice old man who claims to be Santa Claus. However, he is declared insane and institutionalized. A young lawyer and a little girl must prove that he is the real thing.

In December, the library features several other programs. The Mystery Book Club will discuss In the Woods by Tana French on Tuesday, December 15, 2015 from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. In the Woods tells the tale of a small Dublin suburb in the summer of 1984. When mothers call their children home three children do not return from the woods in which they were playing. The police find only one of the children gripping a tree trunk in terror, wearing blood-filled sneakers, and unable to recall any details from the previous hours. Twenty years later, the boy, Rob Ryan, is a detective on the Dublin Murder Squad, when a twelve-year-old girl is found murdered in the same woods. He and his partner Cassie Maddox investigate the case so similar to the previous unsolved mystery. With only scraps of memories to guide him, Ryan must solve the case and discover his own past.

The Reader’s Choice Book Club will meet on Wednesday, December 16 from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. to discuss Leaving Time by Jodi Picoult. Leaving Time features Jenna Metcalf whose mother Alice disappeared after a tragic accident ten years ago. Refusing to believe her mother abandoned her, Metcalf searches for her mother online and explores the pages of her mother’s journals for clues. To find the truth, Metcalf enlists a psychic and private detective to help her.

For more family fun, visit with a live Penguin from Newport Aquarium on Tuesday, December 22 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The program will allow participants to talk to a Penguin Specialist and to watch the penguin waddle, wiggle and shake its tails. There is no cost; however, registration is required.
