Stitches United 002Dozens of local families will find their winter a bit warmer this year because of the generosity of the folks at Stitches United. As part of Bethel Churches United’s annual Christmas basket giveaway, recipients will find a holiday meal, toys for the kids, and also warm gloves crafted by the organization inside their baskets.

Stitches United was founded by Anne Brewer of New Carlisle 11 years ago, consisting of dozens of men and women from around the area who volunteer their time and talents to making an assortment of sewn and crocheted items like blankets, gloves, capes, and more, all of which are donated to charitable organizations. The group creates thousands of pieces every year, many of which are sent to hospitals, nursing homes, and other deserving outlets that will put the handmade items to good use.

This year alone, the group created more than 3,800 much-needed items for the elderly, children, the less-fortunate, and those confined to hospitals and nursing homes because of chronic illness.

In all, Stitches United made 292 pair of gloves and mittens this year, 373 scarves, and 443 hats. They also spent countless hours this year creating specialized items just for those with cancer, Alzheimers, and other chronic illnesses, making “courage capes” for children battling cancer, as well as activity mats for Alzheimers or dementia patients who benefit from working with their hands. They also made hundreds of chemo hats, catheter covers, and bedrail bags, helping to add a sense of dignity to those currently subject to medical procedures and apparatus.

As usual, the families who receive Bethel Churches United’s annual Christmas baskets will find many pairs of unique gloves inside this year, all handcrafted with care.
