DSC 4439Thanks to the efforts of one New Carlisle man, there is no need to travel outside the city limits to see a remarkable Christmas light display.

Nestled away on Greenheart Drive, Ron Juergens has spent countless hours and dollars in creating an animated Christmas light display choreographed to music. The tableau has gained attention through multiple postings on New Carlisle social media platforms, as well as word of mouth, which is bringing more traffic than usual to the neighborhood.

“We almost had a traffic jam out here last night,” Juergens said Sunday, as many residents must have stopped by after the downtown tree lighting Saturday evening.

Juergens, who is an electrician by trade, said he always enjoys taking on new projects.

“I do a lot of crazy things with electric,” he said.

He first set up the light display in 2012, and has steadily added to the scene ever since, saying he has easily quadrupled his investment into the project in the past three years. He’s even had offers from passers-by who wanted to purchase the entire display.

“I had to laugh one day when a guy stopped by and tried to buy it,” Juergens said. “I said that’s not the type of thing you sell—it’s the type of thing you keep adding to.”

Juergens said the whole display usually takes about a week or so to set up, but noted that this year’s “mega tree” addition required two months of extra work. He said that the twenty-foot tree was just too large to reasonably fit in his front yard, so he and a friend took the time to alter it, shortening each pole and rod and wiring it accordingly.

“That thing would have dwarfed my yard,” Juergens said, laughing.

The display appeals to two senses, as dancing lights are set to lively Christmas songs, playing on a loop. Juergens said the scene is powered by a 16-channel controller, all networked together and powered from a computer inside the house. He said that five controllers do the main show, with eight separate controllers on other networks. Somewhere in the mix is an mp3, which is attached to the sequence, making the lights dance correspondingly to the music.

“It’s not enough to be an electric guy, you also have to be a computer guru to do this sort of thing,” he said.

Juergens has even attended training seminars on creating the ultimate Christmas light display. He traveled to The Christmas Ranch in Morrow, Ohio a couple of years back to attend training held by the company which manufactures the equipment used in his display. Juergens said that people who are impressed by his display should really try to travel to see The Christmas Ranch, expressing his appreciation of the Morrow attraction.

“He’s a retired dentist,” Juergens said of The Christmas Ranch’s owner. “I can see myself trying to idolize him, but I’d need acres and acres to do what he does.”

While speaking of expansion, Juergens said that he does plan to keep adding to his own display, noting that he may need to move to a bigger lot or find another venue to display his show in the years to come.

“I’m outgrowing my house,” he said.

Juergens’ display is also featured on his friend Brandon Dodge’s website, stonehurstlights.com, which promotes stunning local Christmas light displays as well as raising toys for the Marine Corps’ Toys for Tots campaign. The Dodges also have created a stunning animated Christmas light display on their Stonehurst Drive property in Huber Heights near 201 at I-70, which serves as a drop-off point for the Toys for Tots drive.

Juergens said his light display went up just after Thanksgiving, and that he will likely leave the lights on until sometime in January. Juergens’ light display is illuminated nightly, located in the 900 block of Greenheart Drive in New Carlisle.
