NEWS
Age 79, of New Carlisle, OH passed away November 8, 2015 with his loving family by his side.   He was born July 28, 1936 in Williamsburg, KY.  Preceded in death by his parents, Ralph & Bessie (Freeman) Smith; brothers, Robert, Monroe & Harold.  He was married for 57 years to his devoted wife, Betty and was a loving father to son, Donald Scott; and daughter, Diane (Robert) Kohut; four grandchildren, Carrie (Austin) Pridgen, Sierra Smith, Cheyenne Smith & Matthew Kohut; great grandson, Aiden Pridgen;  nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He served honorably in the U.S. Navy, 1954-1958, and participated in the Mediterranean Crises.  He joined the Dayton Fire Department in 1959 and retired in 1988 as Deputy Director.  During His time with the city, he touched the lives of thousands of people and was instrumental in providing the best fire protection and high standards for the City.  After retirement, he looked forward to meeting his firemen buddies for breakfast and joining them at the Milton Club, reminiscing about old times.  He was a long time member of the First Baptist Church of New Carlisle and was dedicated to helping the needy, especially at Christmas and volunteering at the local food pantry.  He enjoyed reading, fishing, playing cards and was a enthusiastic Kentucky Wildcats fan.  Visitation with the family will be 10-12 noon Saturday, November 14, 2015 at the First Baptist Church, New Carlisle with a celebration of life service at 12 noon in the church.   In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Dayton.  Arrangements by the TROSTEL, CHAPMAN, DUNBAR & FRALEY FUNERAL HOME, New Carlisle, Ohio.  Expressions of sympathy may be sent to www.trostelchapman.com
