authortecumsehNew York Times’ best-selling author Margaret Peterson Haddix visited Tecumseh Middle School last Tuesday to discuss her work as an author writing books for young adults.

During her presentation, Haddix spoke at length about her inspiration behind many of her books and different series. Haddix is best-known for her series “Shadow Children” and “The Missing.”

Lisa Minna, Library/Media Specialist at Tecumseh Middle School, said that this was Haddix’s fourth visit to Arrow Country in 12 years.

“Research indicates that doing an author study forges a deeper connection to books, improves writing skills, and helps students understand the writing process,” Minna said.

To prepare for Haddix’s visit, Tecumseh middle-schoolers were assigned her books over the summer, and completed several projects over their readings. Minna said the students conducted research about Haddix in the library, as well as writing newsletters and essays “after the research and exposure to a primary source.”

Haddix grew up on a farm some 40 minutes away in Washington Court House, Ohio. She graduated from Ohio’s Miami University with degrees in journalism, creative writing, and history. Haddix has written more than 30 books for young adults, and has received numerous awards and acclaims for her many titles.

Minna said it is important for the students to be exposed to presentations from best-selling authors such as Haddix so that they may form a more personal connection with the author as well as be inspired to achieve such success as well.

“One lesson that the students took away from Margaret Peterson Haddix’s journey is that even students from small towns can achieve their dreams through hard work and perseverance,” said Minna.
