Northwestern To Play For Outright Title

After a big win against Greenon, the Northwestern boys’ basketball team was in control of the CBC Mad River Division with a three-game lead with three games left. Now they are in a battle on Friday night for the league title.

The Warriors lost to Urbana 66-39 last week, then on Friday they lost 48-46 to Shawnee, setting up this Friday’s home game against Indian Lake. A Warriors win will give them the league title outright, but a win by Lake means the two teams will share the title.

Kurt Waters scored 15 points for the Warriors in their loss to Urbana, a game that saw Northwestern only trail by six points at the half. A 36-15 second half by Urbana gave the Hillclimbers the win.

On Friday, Waters again scored 15 points and Evan Noffke added 10 but the Braves escaped with the win.

The Mad River Division title game will begins at 7:30 Friday at Northwestern.

Northwestern Girls Basketball

Northwestern lost to the league champion Ben Logan Raiders last week 52-26 and defeated Indian Lake 48-36 to close out their league play for the season, as the Warriors now prepare for the sectional tournament.

Both Abby Zerkle and Nikki Current, averaging over 20 points per game struggled for their teams. Zerkle scored 13 on 2-14 shooting, but hit 9-12 from the line for the Warriors. Current, the defending Player of the Year in the league, also struggled at 4-12 for 10 points. Dairan Rockhold scored 19 to lead Ben Logan.

Zerkle closed out her CBC career with 36 points in their win against Indian Lake.

Northwestern now plays in the sectional tournament tomorrow night at 6 p.m. at Franklin Monroe High School against Monday’s Arcanum/Indian Lake winner. A win on Thursday would put the Warriors into the sectional championship game on Saturday at 2 p.m. at FM.

Tecumseh Girls Basketball

Tecumseh, who wrapped up the CBC title a couple of weeks ago, celebrated their unbeaten league run with a 79-24 win against Bellefontaine last week on a day that would see a lot of accomplishments recognized.

Not only did the Arrows finish the regular season 20-2 with the 79-24 win over Bellefontaine, now they begin their post season on Saturday with the sectional tournament.

Against the Chiefs, Corinne Thomas led the way with a game high 23 points and Presley Griffitts added 20 for the Arrows. Allison Berner scored 15 to add to the offense for the Arrows.

Also on Wednesday, the middle school teams were honored for their successful season, and the Arrows cut down the nets to celebrate their league title.

Tecumseh now plays Miamisburg in the sectional tournament at Troy High School on Saturday at 2 p.m. A reminder that presale tickets can be purchased at the school in advance, which helps the Tecumseh athletic program.

On the note of the middle school team, both the seventh and eighth grade teams played for league championships, and next week a look back at their successful season.

Tecumseh Wrestling

The Arrows will host Stebbins in a dual match on Wednesday at the high school, with a 6 p.m. start. It will be senior night and former Arrow wrestler Caleb Young will be honored. Young was tragically killed in an automobile accident on April 5, 2016.
