Bethel Girls Basketball

The struggles continued for the Bethel girls’ basketball team last week, as they lost a pair of games to Xenia Christian, and a league contest at county for Miami East.

Xenia Christian scored 27 points in the opening quarter to jump in front of the Bees, and never looked back in a 64-33 rout of Bethel.

“They had some good shooters, and it was one of those things where we either had to give up the outside or inside, and they took advantage of it,” Bethel coach Mark Mays said. “We played solid defense and made them shoot over us and they had six threes. That opened things up for them.”

Mays did take some positives away from the loss.

“We had eight kids score for us, and we were making things happen,” he said. “We had a lower number of turnovers and the kids have been doing a better job taking care of the ball.”

“While we have promoted the positive things, we still talk about the things we need to improve on.”

Becky Schweiterman led Bethel with eight points, while Sarah Swisher and Carrie Smith each added five.

Also last week, Bethel lost to Miami East 60-35 after falling behind 27-15 at the half.

It was 29-20 East with 6:20 left in the third period when East went into a half-court defense and according to Mays, the kids didn’t handle it too well.

“We panicked a bit,” he said. “We have been breaking it the whole game, but they really got to us and scored 23 points in the third quarter and it got us.”

Swisher led Bethel with seven, while Jillian Callaham added six.
