It was a rough non-conference game last week for the Bethel softball team, as they traveled to Riverside and fell short 15-3 in a run-rule game.

Bethel opened the game with a run, as Grace Anthony opened the game with a walk and stole second. Maddie Inman then sacrificed her to third and a passed ball allowed Anthony to score, giving the Bees an early 1-0 lead. It did not last.

Riverside took advantage of two Bethel errors, which led to six runs scoring in their first at-bat, giving the host Pirates the early 6-1 lead.

“We gave them a couple of errors, but they also put the ball in play,” said Bethel coach Jeremy Reittinger. “We had missed opportunities to get out of the inning.”

Morgan Reittinger led off with a walk for Bethel to start the second inning, but she was left stranded following two strikeouts and a groundout.

Five straight hits led to six more runs for Riverside in the second inning, and after two swings of the bat, the Bees trailed by a monumental 12-1 score.

Bethel tried to make a comeback in the third, as the first two batters walked to open the inning, then Becky Schweiteran had an RBI single scoring Ashley Buchholtz. Bethel scored their final run of the game when Reittinger doubled in Schweiterman to make it 12-3.

Riverside added a run in the third, and two more in the fourth to wrap up the scoring at 15-3 in a five-inning game.

“Once we got adjusted we were ok,” Reittinger said. “I think they were better than us, but not 15-3 better than us. You can’t recover from a 12-run deficit especially with us being so young.”

*The JV team also lost last week, falling to Greeneview 15-8.

Both the baseball and softball teams did not play Covington on Thursday due to inclement weather conditions.
