He was no longer a secret last year for the Bethel boys basketball team. The only thing is.... opponents still couldn’t stop him.

Caleb South has become one of the most feared basketball players in not only the Cross County Conference, but also the entire Miami Valley. People are already using his name in the same sentence as the greatest Bee of them all Matt Witt.

But for South, all he wants to do is win. Last season, the Bees advanced to the district finals, and he knows that not only does he have to make his game better, but in turn it will also make the team better.

“My goal coming into next year is to build on the season I had last year and win the league,” South said. He also wants to lead the Bees further in the tournament that this past season.

During the off-season, South has been working hard to make his game even more dangerous which will turn him into more of a threat on the court than he already is.

“I’m trying to be more consistent with my jump shot and my range on my jump shot,” South said. “I’m also trying to get stronger in the weight room. I also am working to get smarter and be more assertive on the court with the team.”

For South, he has already produced many memories at Bethel even though he has only played two years so far. The junior reflected back on a couple of things that he is proud of over the first two seasons.

“Starting my freshman year and going to districts and getting to play at UD Arena,” he said. “Also playing for my mom my freshman year was awesome because she has been the most influential person in my life.”

Using the summer to work out with his dad and play AAU, South can remember back to where he first felt the love for the sport.

“I started playing when I was six,” he said. “My mom guided me to playing every sport growing up, and basketball was her favorite and it became my favorite. Growing up at my grandparents house we had extremely competitive basketball games. My grandparents always support me in everything I do, so I am thankful for the influence that have had in my life.”

South not only has a lot of support from his family, he also has a lot of respect from the area coaches. He was named first-team all-conference, along with District Nine, He was also first-team all-area, second-team all-Southwest District and Honorable Mention all-Ohio.

The future psychology major is also a member of student council at Bethel, and looks to play his favorite sport in college.

“I plan to just work hard every day and trusting God,” South said.
