Bethel headed to Newton last week for a doubleheader soccer game with the girls’ and boys’ teams set to battle the Indians. Unfortunately, Mother Nature had other plans.

With 16 minutes left in the opening half of the girls’ game, the contest was halted due to lightning which hit the area for most of the evening. There was no score and that game, along with the boys’ game were both postponed until a later date.

*Also last week, the Bees tied Miami Valley School 3-3, in a game that saw Bethel score with less than ten seconds left in the game to give the Bees the tie against the Rams.

Carter Haak scored first for the Rams to give them a 1-0 lead, but the Bees tied the game when Tyler Brueckman found the back of the net, as Korry Hamlin recorded the assist.

After Miami Valley took the lead again, it was Bethel tying the game as Hamlin scored with the assist going to Nick Schmidt, making it 2-2.

With Miami Valley grabbing the lead once again, it came down to an unusual candidate to bring the Bees back. Kepper Alex van Haaren scored on a header from Hamlin to end the game in a tie.

“As the saying goes, if you are around long enough you will see it all,” said Bethel coach Bob Hamlin. “Tonight I saw something I have never witnessed before. Alex a 6’6” goalkeeper got into the box and headed it in with authority. You always dream something like that would happen but it is something that seldom does.”

“This was another battle that turned into an epic up and down battle,” he added. “We made a few mistakes and gave away some easy goals to Miami Valley but the TEAM battled hard and kept coming back. We hit the cross bar I think three times and had a few other close shots but the team kept their heads up. They were not to be denied.”

*The Bees lost a tough match last week to Dayton Christian 5-1, as the Bees watched as Dayton Christian jump in front 2-0. After Hamlin cut their lead in half with a goal, DC’s Jake Erlandson scored the next three goals, as they knocked off the Bees.

“It was a very tough game tonight,” Hamlin said. “Dayton Christian is state ranked team for a reason and we gave our best effort tonight. However they wore us down in the second half and pulled away for a win.”

“In the second half it was the Jake Erlandson show. We just did not have an answer for his speed. He makes great runs and they are able to find him in dangerous positions. We just have to find a way to maintain possession of the ball and generate some sustained offense to let our defense have a chance to regroup. The kids did give me a great effort tonight.”

Bethel Girls Soccer- Olivia Rust scored the lone goal of the game, as the Bees girls’ soccer team defeated Kenton Ridge 1-0 on Saturday, running their record to 3-1-2 overall.
