After a scoreless first half, the Bethel girls’ soccer team exploded for four goals in the second half, and the defense stayed strong as the Bees shutout Tri County North 4-0. With the win, the Bees win their first CCC game of the year.

“We started to up the play in the second half with great combo play,” said Bethel coach Dru Bescoe. “We were putting people in position to score, and they were going in during the second half. We had a frustrating first half but you have to battle through it.”

The game was 0-0 at the break, but it wasn’t from the lack of shots. Bethel fired 11 shots at the keeper but none of them could get by.

“We had so many chances but couldn’t get one in,” Bescoe said. “One time the ball got by the keeper and there was a defender to kick it away. I was hoping the floodgates would open after the first shot went in.”

Erika Turner put the Bees on the board five minutes into the second half, as she was taken down in the box and she scored on the penalty kick, giving the Bees a 1-0 lead.

Turner scored again to make it 2-0, followed by a corner kick from Maggie Kahler finished by Olivia Rust. “Olivia played the ball exactly where she was supposed to and Maggie ran in and finished it,” Bescoe said.

Mackenzie Hoeferling scored the fourth goal with the assist from Turner.

Bethel goes to 4-1-2 on the season and Bescoe is impressed how his team has played so far.

“We are playing solid defense, we just need to finish our opportunities,” he said. “Kelsey Hackney is a big reason for our four shutouts. Kayle Grable is our sweeper and also a senior who has been the reason they don’t get a lot of shots. If they do Hackney takes care of them”

As the Bees head into the second half of the year, Bescoe knows his team has to stay on top of their game to compete for a league title.

“We need to build momentum, and take every game like it’s the CCC title, because if you lose one game you are out. The girls are focused.”

*The Bethel boys’ team cruised to an easy 9-1 win over Tri County North. Scoring four goals with two assists was Tyler Brueckman, while Joe Miller added two goals and two assists, and Korry Hamlin contributed one goal and three assists. Also scoring for the Bees was Zach Moore and Aiden Flomerfelt. Assists came from Moore and Nick Schmidt.

“It was a good match tonight to shake the rust off and get all players some good minutes,” Bethel coach Bob Hamlin said. “We have not played in ten days but have some important matches ahead.”

“I thought we moved the ball well and seemed to have it quite often in dangerous scoring positions. We could do a little better job of finishing and continuing off the ball runs to create more.”
