Gabby Behr scored the games’ lone goal in the second half, leading the Bethel girls’ soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Northwestern last week in the opening game of the Division Three soccer sectional tournament.

The Bees, who entered the tournament as the #11 seed, played at home and despite having some good chances in the first half, couldn’t break through against the Warriors defense.

“We had some great chances in the first half including breakaways that were right at the keeper,” said Bethel coach Dru Bescoe. “We just couldn’t get through her. We were creating a lot of good chances and played wonderful at times, we just couldn’t get on the board.”

Bethel came out in the second half, and with 30:45 left in the game, Turner took the ball on the right side around the edge of the box and crossed it to Behr, and she put the ball past the Northwestern keeper for a 1-0 lead for the Bees.

“We were telling them to play the same way they were once we took the lead, and we wanted to play forward to get an insurance goal,” Bescoe said. “Northwestern is a good team and it was a dogfight.”

“Our defense was strong and they kept everyone in front of them,” he added. “Kelsey Hackney did a great job and made a couple of big plays tonight.”

With the win, Bethel runs their record to 8-5-4.

“We were going to try a couple of things tonight, but we couldn’t pull away tonight.”
