Bethel saw their season come to an end last week in the boys’ soccer District Finals, as they fell short against the state’s top-ranked team Summitt Country Day 6-0 to see their season come to an end.

“Playing the number one team in the state was a hard chore,” said Bethel coach Bob Hamlin. “They are so technically gifted and move the ball so well. Their first goal was a rip from 25 yards. They just have so many weapons.”

“We gave up a couple of goals we should not have in the first half and were down 5-0. We regrouped at half and actually we finally got used to the speed of play.”

Despite the tough loss, Hamlin recognizes the hard work from his team.

“Our kids played hard throughout and never gave up. I am very proud of them and this was a great learning experience for them.”

Bethel ended up the season 14-5-1 and the Cross County Conference champions, winning their last ten games in a row leading up to this loss.

“These kids worked hard all year, executed game plans well, and came together to form a true team,” said Hamlin. “I am very proud of these guys.”

Leading up to that game was a 4-1 win in the sectional finals against Catholic Central.

“This was the best game we played all year,” Hamlin said. “Our boys were ready tonight and we were very sharp tonight. The key against Catholic is to not allow an early goal and play catch up. If you can score early then they cannot sit back like they prefer to do.”

Korry Hamlin scored at the 36:35 mark of the first half as he scored from 25 yards out to give the Bees a quick 1-0 lead with the assist going to Joe Miller.

Bethel continued to keep the pressure on as Miller again dished the ball off for an assist, as Tyler Brueckman scored to give the Bees a 2-0 lead.

Right before the half, Catholic Central’s Bryce Roberts scored to close the gap to 2-1 and it appeared that the Bees would take the slim lead into the half.

With under one minute left, Tyler Brueckman made a throw in that was misplayed by the Catholic Central keeper, and it went into the net with 0:49 left, giving the Bees a 3-1 lead at the break.

The second half saw the Bees come out and score again when Miller played a ball to Daniel Ross who scored to give the Bees a 4-1 lead.

“All of our guys played well tonight,” Hamlin said, who also noted that a couple of Bees players stepped up their game.

“Drew Kubiak, our outside back was able to come forward tonight and he made dangerous run after dangerous run to help us keep the pressure on Catholic. Evan Hart was given the assignment to defensively mark Catholic’s strong goal scorer Roberts and did a great job containing him.”
