Bethel junior Caleb South scored his 1,000th career point Friday night in their season opener.

Bethel junior Caleb South scored his 1,000th career point to lead the Bees’ boys’ basketball team to an easy 61-37 win over Ansonia on Friday night. The Bees, who are expected to be among the elite teams in the area this year, opened the season on a high note.

It took South to just past the midway point of the first quarter to reach that milestone, as he connected from the free throw line to break the mark. The 6-foot guard who most consider the best player in the conference this year ended up with 30 points on the night.

After the game was tied after the opening period, the Bees then took over the game quickly. Their defense stymied the Tigers, holding them to only eight points in the second period, and the Bees dropped 29 to explode out to a 40-19 lead at the half.

In addition to the big night from South, Ryan Rose added 18 for the Bees.

Bethel returns to action on Friday night as they host Mississinawa Valley at 7:30, in a game that will be broadcast live by the Gem City Sports Network.
