Just like the Bethel girls’ basketball team, the Franklin Monroe squad is looking to turn their program around. Both teams have struggled in recent years until last year when the Bees reached their goal of double digit wins.

Now the Jets are gaining some momentum as they defeated the Bees 49-41 last week on the road, to pull their record over .500 on the season. Not bad for a team that starts three freshman and a fourth that would normally start played significant minutes until she tore her ACL last week.

The Bees, who trailed by ten early in the fourth quarter, pulled to within six with 2:43 left before the Jets reeled off six straight points to put the game away, and send the Bees down to defeat.

“We started slow tonight,” Bethel coach Mark Mays said. “Our idea was to go out and press them, coming in that was our gameplan. We needed to box out and as the game went on, we did a better job of that.”

The opening quarter was as evenly played as possible, as there were three ties, and the only time the game was larger than a two-point lead was when Audrey Cable reeled off three points to take the Franklin Monroe lead to 7-4, but a Bethel three from Morgan Crase knotted the game at seven late in the period.

Klaudia Lowery and Alaina Hawthorn kept the Bees tied as each hit shots early in the second period, but the Jets reeled off six straight points including four from freshman Corina Conley, and free throws from Cable and Kennedi Morris took the Jets lead out to 20-12 with 1:41 left in the half.

Delaney Hardert scored for Bethel at the end of the half, which send the Jets into the half with a 20-14 lead.

Bethel closed the lead to 22-20 with 5:25 left in the third quarter on a layup from Becky Schweiterman, but again the Jets pulled away. Conley scored twice, and Belle Cable buried a three to take the Jets lead out to 33-20.

Leading by 14 heading to the fourth, the Jets watched as Hawthorn scored consecutive shots and when Kayla Grable hit a midrange jumper and Schweiterman scored, it was suddenly a six point game.

Conley led the Jets with 14, Audrey Cable added nine. Hawthorn and Schweiterman each scored 12 for the Bees.
