After a slow start in the opening game, the Tecumseh volleyball team pulled away for an easy win, and rolled to a three-set sweep of Wayne in a non-league contest last week 25-8, 25-20, 25-20.

The Warriors battled Tecumseh in the opening minutes of the first set, battling to tie the set at 6-6, the fifth tie of the game. From that point, the Arrows took command of the first set.

Seven consecutive points from Kirsten Nartker broke open the tie and gave the Arrows a 14-6 lead, and the floodgates were opened.

After Wayne broke the string of points, Tecumseh took over again, as Lucy Eier reeled off six points, and as Kenzie Nabil put together a run of points, the Arrows wrapped up the set 25-8. Eier also had a solid net game in the opener with four kills for Tecumseh.

The second game also saw both teams come out battling, as they were tied six times in the first seven points before the Arrows took an 8-7 lead.

Nabil again put together a run of service points, and behind Nartker’s two kills, the Arrows built an 18-12 lead.

Tecumseh led 22-15 and was in control when the Warriors put together four points before Macy Berner’s kill ended the run, and Tecumseh finished game two.

Game three saw the Warriors get the early lead, as they built an 8-3 lead. The Arrows recovered to cut their deficit to 9-0, but the Warriors went on another run, jumping to a 17-10 lead. From there, Tecumseh took over again and went on the game winning run.

Five straight points from Zoey Dysinger, and three more from Nartker put the Arrows in front for the first in the game at 20-19, then went on a 5-1 run to end the game. Dysinger capped off the win with a kill.

Nabil led the Arrows with 11 digs on defense, while Nartker recorded four aces and Mackenzie Drews had 29 assists. Jillian Williams and Dysinger each had nine kills on the night.

“We didn’t perform well in the second and third set,” said Tecumseh coach Nathan Matthews. “Give credit to Wayne for making it tough on us.”

*Also last week the Arrows lost a three-set match against CBC foe Urbana, now a member of the Kenton Trail Division for this season. Tecumseh lost 25-22, 25-18, 26-24.

The Arrows trailed 23-20 in the third game before running off four straight points to take the lead and served for set point. Urbana recovered and scored the next three points to wrap up the match.

“Tonight was just one of those nights where nothing will go your way,” Matthews said. “I thought the effort was there but we just couldn’t execute when we needed to.”

Nabil led the Arrows with 12 digs, while Nartker added six kills and Drews had 14 assists.

*Also last week, the Arrows defeated Bellefontaine 22-25, 25-16, 25-18, 25-23. Nabil led Tecumseh with 28 digs, Dysinger added six aces, Nartker with 14 kills and Drews with 39 assists.

Tecumseh was down 6-1 to start the second set after trailing for most of the first set.

“We really started to make strides toward the team we want to be today,” Matthews said. “After a slow start, we were able to get into a zone and maintain our aggressive style of play.”

“This culminated in our best defensive effort of the season and a great team win.”

The Arrows host Kenton Ridge tonight, Piqua next Monday and Northwestern on Tuesday.
