Plans for New Carlisle’s 2016 “National Night Out” were discussed when the New Carlisle Neighborhood Watch (NCNW) group met for its monthly meeting on June eighth in the Smith Park shelter house. The group also discussed plans that will help strengthen its partnership with local law enforcement.

New Carlisle will join the rest of the nation when it celebrates the annual “National Night Out” on Tuesday, August 2. The event is a community-building campaign that promotes partnerships between police and community, as well as neighborhood camaraderie, in the hopes of making America’s neighborhoods safer places to live.

In past years, attendance at the local National Night Out event has been low, but NCNW member, Jennie Stump, says this year’s event is shaping up to be better than ever. “There are a lot of activities planned for this year’s event, plus “Care Flight on Wheels” will be there, as well as a local food truck and, of course, first responders and members of local law enforcement.” NCNW members say getting residents and law enforcement members together will help build relationships that will help lower the crime rate make neighborhoods safer in the New Carlisle area.

National Night Out is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch.

New Carlisle City Manager, Randy Bridge, was on hand to talk about an initiative that will form a stronger partnership between the NCNW group and local law enforcement. According to Mr. Bridge, the County Sheriff suggested having an active-duty law enforcement officer report to the monthly NCNW meetings. Officers will let group members know how things are progressing in problem areas, to give updates on law enforcement activity, and get feedback from NCNW members.

NCNW members agreed when Mr. Bridge commented, “Having officers who are still active work with this group will be beneficial to everyone. They get to hear first-hand about things this group is worried about; and this group can get real-time answers from someone who is working the streets and knows the local community. It’s a win-win for everybody.”

Citing low attendance at NCNW meetings, members discussed changing meeting nights from Wednesdays to Thursdays in order to make it more convenient for others to attend , but are undecided whether making such a change will actually be beneficial. The matter will be further discussed at the group’s July 13 meeting.

NCNW meetings are held the second Wednesday of every month at 6:30pm in the Smith Park shelter house. For more information about joining the NCNW group or to get information about New Carlisle’s National Night Out, contact Jennie Stump at (937) 845-2235.
