The Tecumseh Arrows football team played their final game of the season Friday against the Springfield Shawnee Braves. The Arrows came into the game looking to finish on a high note and take down the Braves, and though Tecumseh put forth a very strong effort on both offensive and defensive sides of the ball. The Braves proved to be too much for the Arrows in the end, as Tecumseh lost 35-14.

The Tecumseh defense had issues all evening trying to hamper the Braves’ quarterback run option scheme that helped Springfield Shawnee gash the Arrows defense for multiple big gains on the ground. On Shawnee’s first offensive possession, they were able to storm down the field and running back Todd King broke into the end zone for the game’s first score as the Braves took an early 7-0 lead.

While the Arrows defense played well and swarmed to the ball aggressively, the Shawnee rush attack was too strong as the Braves added two more rushing touchdowns in the second quarter to take a 21-0 lead over the Arrows.

Tecumseh scored their first points when wide receiver Clay Mastin caught a pass from Jayden McFarland and broke free from a tackle then dove into the end zone for a 34 yard score. Going into halftime the Braves were able to push their lead to 28-7, but the Arrows never stopped giving full effort.

To begin the second half, Tecumseh was successful in kicking an onside kick as Ryan Rowland pounced on top of the James Gray kick, and gave the Arrows some life and excellent starting field position.

Wasting no time, on the first play after the onside kick recovery, Tecumseh quarterback Will Sowder found Clay Mastin for a 36 yard completion down to the Shawnee one yard line. Sowder then scored on the very next play with a sneak into the end zone that made the score 28-14 with 11:28 remaining in the third quarter.

Arrows defenders Devin Altop, Hunter Hensley, Isaiah Trimble, Ryan Rowland and a host of other played well for the Tecumseh defense and fought hard through the final whistle, but the rushing attack of the Braves just wouldn’t quit.

Springfield Shawnee controlled the clock in the final quarter and didn’t allow the Arrows to get much momentum and after scoring a late touchdown, the Braves held on to win 35-14.

Tecumseh is a tough team, with a lot of grit and determination. Though not always coming out on top, the Arrows always played with a passion for the game that is commendable. The Tecumseh Arrows finish their season with a record of 5-5.
