Hunter Hensley was in early inning trouble for the Tecumseh baseball team last week, as they hosted Sidney in a non-conference game. The senior survived a shaky opening inning to settle in and pitch a complete game shutout, as the Arrows defeated the Yellow Jackets 3-0 to give Tecumseh their second consecutive win to open the new season.

“It feels good to get the win today,” Tecumseh coach Chad Hale said after the game. “Hunter has been a solid pitcher for us for three years, and we will have a chance to win every time he takes the mound.”

Hensley was in trouble early, as Sidney loaded the bases in their first at-bat, but the Arrows hurler escaped the jam with consecutive strikeouts to get through the first inning scoreless.

Tecumseh broke through in the second inning, as Hensley opened with an infield single, and was moved up on a sacrifice by Reid Hale. When Keaton Mohler reached on an error, the lead runner was sitting at third when Davey Berner grounded out to shortstop to score Hensley and give the Arrows a 1-0 lead.

With two outs, Logan Stryker then singled in a run to score Mohler, and Tecumseh led 2-0 after two innings.

Hensley walked the leadoff batter in the third inning, but bounced back to strike out the side to strand the runner at second.

The Arrows had runners on base most of the night. Will Sowder singled in the third, and Hale walked to lead off the fourth. After he was doubled off on a line drive to second base, Berner singled but was stranded.

A big play in the sixth kept the Jackets scoreless when they led off with a single, and after stealing second, he was thrown out trying to steal third. A later single would have scored the runner, but Tecumseh maintained their two-run lead heading to what turned out to be the Arrows last at bat.

In the bottom of the sixth, Hale walked and Kyle McDonald ripped a hit to right field to score Hale, and give the Arrows a little cushion at 3-0.

“We had timely two-out hits today,” Hale said. “Kyle had a big pinch hit in the sixth, and that is his job this year.”

“It was a low scoring game, and every play counts. We came up with some good plays on defense. We are 2-0 on the season and that is a good feeling.”

Hensley struck out 12 batters and only allowed four hits, all singles.

Tecumseh is back in action tomorrow night hosting Ben Logan, then host Springfield on Saturday in a doubleheader.
