Ashley Fite was too much on the mound for Springfield last week with a strong 12 strikeout performance against the Wildcats. But it took a solid seventh inning to hold of the Cats as the Arrows survived for a 5-4 non-conference win last week.

“Our girls gutted out a tough victory against a very much improved Springfield team,” Tecumseh coach Christi Leggett said. “Even though we are still having some errors defensively, the girls are looking much better than in their opening game.”

Fite found herself in trouble in the opening inning as the Wildcats loaded the bases with two outs, but the Arrows sophomore struck out Taryn Freer to end the inning, and keep the game scoreless before the Arrows came to the plate for the first time.

Zoey Dean reached on a one-out single in the bottom of the first, and moved around to third when Logan Markstrom doubled, putting two runners into scoring position. Fite helped herself with a two-run double to the wall, giving the Arrows a 2-0 lead. The next two batters struck out as Fite was stranded at third after a stolen base.

After Fite struck out the side in the second, the Arrows put another runner in scoring position in the second, but could not score her.

Springfield scored in the third when Maddie Kearns reached on an error, and later came into score on a hit from Kayleigh Haddix to cut the Tecumseh lead in half.

In the bottom of the inning, the Arrows got the run back and added one to make it 4-1. Dean singled and advanced on an error. One out later, Fite drove in a run with a single and she came into score when Nina Smith singled to put the Arrows lead at three runs.

Springfield again fought back to score twice in the fifth inning to cut their deficit to one run, but the Arrows answered in the bottom of the fifth.

Markstrom walked with one out, she stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. As Fite walked, she rounded first and immediately went to second, allowing Markstrom to score on a steal, giving the Arrows a 5-3 lead.

The Wildcats scored in the seventh, but the Arrows held on for the win.

“Ashley has started out the season very strong so far, she is 9-9 in the first three games that we have played, including two homeruns and several doubles” Leggett said. “She has also pitched three solid games for us. We will continue to work on our defense and work toward error-free games.”
