Yes, you read the title correctly. There is a creature named Skywalker Texas Ranger. She is a small German Shepherd with the sweetest disposition (and the slimiest nose), and she belongs to my daughter, Hollie.
âItâs like a Wheel of Fortune before and after puzzle,â Hollie told me, when I asked her where in the world she came up with the name. âBut weâre just going to call her âSkyâ.â Sky was about seven human years old when the police raided the puppy farm where she lived in inhumane conditions and was bred repeatedly. When they rescued her, she was underweight, had hip dysphasia, was very weak, and was an emotional basket case. Naturally, she is the one Hollie and her husband and kids had to adopt. Sky has come a long way in the past year-and-a-half since she came to live with my daughterâs family, but she still has some emotional baggage from her past life. Mostly, she has come to find her sense of security in Hollie. So, when a ten-day family vacation in Orlando was planned, I was a bit apprehensive about how Sky would be, left behind with just me. Letâs just say that weâd always gotten along okay, but were not close. The first couple of days, when I would let Sky outside, she would just run to the driveway and look up and down it, then hang her head and drag herself back to the porch. She would let me pet her, but she wouldnât be consoled. She barely ate anything those first few days â not even the rawhide bones she usually devours. When she was inside, she wouldnât leave her bed, except to get an occasional drink of water. By day five, I was pretty concerned. I brought her food bowl over to her bedside and tried to feed her a few bites by hand. She sniffed once or twice and then just turned away. I let my face fall onto the top of her head and cried while I repeatedly promised her that Hollie was coming back soon. When I looked into her sad, dark eyes, I knew I wasnât getting through. So I cried out to the only One who could. âDear Father,â I prayed, âplease tell Sky in her own language, that she has not been abandoned by the ones she loves, and that they will soon come back to her.â Then I left it in His hands, kissed that slimy nose, and went about my business. Later that evening, I found a near-empty food bowl and a dog who wanted to play with me outside. It was such a relief. Sky continued to look for Hollie until the actual joyous reunion took place. But she was much better. Iâm so thankful that the God who has the entire cosmos to control, still cares to answer a prayer for a precious animal with a ridiculous name.
