“They’re back.” This is an oft-quoted line from a popular science fiction movie. But since 2007, it’s also becoming an oft-heard local way of saying the “Help CROP Stop Hunger” signs are going back up in the windows of New Carlisle areas stores and other businesses. (More on that below).

The Annual New Carlisle Area CROP Walk will launch from New Carlisle Church of the Brethren on Sunday afternoon, September 20. The all-volunteer planners, organizers, and walkers, led by this year’s Chairwoman, Carol Dutton, are excited about this opportunity for Bethel Township to once again show its loving, caring heart to those in need. After topping $7,900 in donations in 2008, they are convinced this year’s $8,000 target will be met and surpassed because of the commitment to community and caring about others that is the on-going legacy of New Carlisle and surrounding township citizens.

Launched by Church World Service (CWS) in 1947, the acronym meant Christian Rural Overseas Program and Wilmer Funderburg of New Carlisle, OH was instrumental in creating and perpetuating the initiative.  Now, 62 years later the response to urgent needs at home and abroad is known as Community Response to Overcome Poverty. Another way in which New Carlisle is an instigator of success in the broader CROP walk effort is the “signs in windows” initiative. Begun in 2007 in the New Carlisle area, the idea was picked up on the internet and is now a vital part of CROP Walks in several Ohio cities and blossoming in other states as well. Congratulations to all area businesses and organizations who are participating. What an excellent influence you are!

In the midst of far reaching economic decline, CROP Walks continue to help our neighbors near and far. Twenty-five percent of contributions goes to the local BCU Food Pantry. The Food Pantry is located immediately south of New Carlisle United Methodist Church and is open from 4:00-5:30 pm Wednesdays and noon-2:30 pm Fridays.

Church World Service has announced a strong commitment for the next three years to using CROP Walk proceeds around the world to help suffering children with food, clean water, and various other projects that foster their health, education, and welfare.

A key component of our CROP Walk is the Corporate Sponsor Program. The corporate sponsor who makes the greatest contribution will win the 2009 Wilmer Funderburg Corporate CROP Sponsor Champion award and will be recognized as such on a beautifully framed certificate presented to company leadership by the BCU President, Julie Fisher. Last year’s winner was Lady Fingers Nail Salon at 227 South Main Street.. In addition to businesses, civic and service organizations that desire an information package on corporate sponsorship can contact Larry Fry at 849-6127 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
