By Joyell Nevins Staff Writer School is back in session! The quiet school halls of summer are once again filled will the annual convergence of chattering children, nervous parents, and staff eager to fulfill their mission of filling youthful minds with knowledge.
“It was typical – fast and furious,” spoke Park Layne Elementary secretary Colette Hartley of their first day. Principal Gregory Baker said, “It was a truly wonderful day.” Donnelsville Elementary opened with no hassle, either. “It was so smooth, it was scary,” said Donnelsville secretary Karen Fairchild. All across the district, kindergartners are adjusting to a new environment, some the first time they’ve been away from their home. Meanwhile, the seniors are just excited there’s an end in sight. “I have a lot of school spirit,” said Tecumseh High senior Ashley Freeman. She is already looking forward to spirit week and what the senior prank might be this year. While some classes are still breaking the ice, other teachers have already given out homework and jumped right into reading assignments. And at New Carlisle Elementary, the students even had an unexpected visitor. Principal Brian Dixon, who formerly taught at Tecumseh Middle, explained, “At the middle school, we might have had a fight on the first day. Here, our biggest issue was we had a cat in the building.” Medway Elementary principal Chad Miller was amazed by the ease of the beginning, too. “It’s almost three days into it, and I haven’t seen one kid in my office,” he said. The consensus seems to be that the hardest part of the first week of school – getting up to that alarm clock. “It was tiring,” said Freeman. Tecumseh Middle intervention specialist Stacy Davis agreed, “I was exhausted by the end of the first day. You just got to get back in the routine.”
