A New Carlisle mail carrier was injured Thursday afternoon when her car was rear-ended by another driver.
Jane Rittenhouse had stopped to deliver mail on Ayers Pike when her car was struck from behind by a pickup truck driven by a man reported to be in his 80's. The driver of the truck claimed he did not see the postal vehicle.
Rittenhouse was working in her personal car, not a Postal Service truck. The extent of her injuries were not immediately known, but are not believed to be life-threatening. She was taken to Miami Valley Hospital.
"I can't tell you the last time something like this has happened," said Shirley Gentry, a Postal employee. "I don't think it's ever happened in the 25 years I've worked here."
Rittenhouse had just returned to work following an accident in town recently. She had just picked up her car from the shop the day before.
The identity of the truck driver was not released by Sheriff's deputies on the scene. He was charged with Assured Clear Distance.
Postal Service personnel were on the scene to protect the mail. A substitute carrier was "on his way" to continue the route with minimal delay in mail delivery.
