Four area fire departments battled an early morning blaze at a Troy Road home on Friday morning. It took them over four hours to get the fire under control.
Crews from Pike Township, New Carlisle, German Township and Christiansburg responded to the call at 11737 Troy Road. The first alarm came in at 3:02 a.m.
The blaze was under control by 7:30 a.m.
The five residents of the home were alerted by the family dog. A family member let the dog out and saw smoke. All of the residents escaped without injury. The dog re-entered the home and perished.
Pike Township fire crews were summoned to the residence shortly after 2:00 PM when the fire rekindled. “Obviously there were still some hot spots,” said Lt. Jim Steggeman. “And with the wind picking up, it must have fanned those hot spots into flames.”
The blaze is under investigation by the State Fire Marshall’s office, but early indications point to an electrical problem as the cause. The home is a total loss.
