Zimmerman was apprehended Saturday morning at the Fairborn Apartments off Maple Avenue Saturday morning, just over 12 hours after he fled.  Zimmerman was originally arrested for his uncle’s murder at the same apartments on January 15.  After his flight from officers at the hospital Friday night, Zimmerman broke into a Columbia Street home in the City of Springfield, where he allegedly stayed all night unbeknownst to the 70-year-old woman living there.  Around 8:20 the next morning, Springfield Police received a call from the boyfriend of the woman in the Columbia Street home.  He told officers that he was just speaking with her on the phone about going to breakfast and warning her about Zimmerman’s escape.  She told her boyfriend that Zimmerman was with her, and immediately disconnected the phone.

Law enforcement arrived at her Columbia Street home to find her missing, as well as her new car.  Reports from Sheriff Kelly indicate that a struggle had taken place inside her home.  When she arrived back to her residence, she told officers where she had taken Zimmerman.  She was then transported to the hospital for the non-life-threatening injuries she had sustained when Zimmerman assaulted her.

Clark County law enforcement then notified Fairborn Police of Zimmerman’s alleged whereabouts, who had also been receiving reports that he was hiding in the Fairborn Apartments.  Fairborn Police located Zimmerman in the hallway of one of the Fairborn Apartments and took him into custody without incident just before 10:30 Saturday morning.

The Clark County Sheriff’s Office said the combined efforts of their department along with Springfield Police, and Fairborn Police helped in capturing this fugitive.  “This is a violent individual who is a danger to society and must remain in custody,” read a statement from the sheriff’s office. “The Clark County Sheriff’s Office will work with the Juvenile Court Detention Center to insure such escapes never occur in the future. There will be several felony charges filed against Raymond Zimmerman to include escape, aggravated burglary, kidnapping and auto theft in addition to the pending murder charge.”
