Bethel & Pike Township Sheriff Reports

Sunday 9/4

1:35 a.m. To Frayne Dr. for a report of phone harassment. A man reported that he was receiving texts and voice mails from the mother of a female friend. He said that she left messages stating that she wanted her “grandbabies” back from him. He said she sounded intoxicated. He said that she got his number from her daughter, and since the man was with the daughter earlier, she thinks the kids are with him. The deputy spoke with the mother and was advised to stop contacting the RP or she could be charged.

10:10 a.m. To Orth Dr. for a report of a theft. A woman reported that her car was stolen from her home. The deputy later learned that the car was involved in a hit/skip crash earlier in the day. The report from Springfield PD stated that the RP and her passenger fled the area. The deputy spoke to a witness of the crash who took pictures of the occupants of the vehicle, and one of them was the RP. The witness also had a picture of the driver’s phone on which she had pulled up her insurance information. The screen of the driver’s phone had distinct cracks on the screen. The deputy went back to see the RP and asked to see her phone. It had the same cracks as the phone in the picture. She finally said that a male friend was driving and they were drunk. She said she started to give her information to the witness when the male friend told her to run away. The male friend was advised to contact Springfield Police, and the RP was charged with falsification.

6:27 p.m. To Drake Ave. for a report of phone harassment. A woman reported that her brother-in-law has been sending her threatening text messages. She said that today at about 5:00 p.m. she received several threats sent from his mother’s cell phone. She said that she called to tell him that his texts were unwanted, and he replied that he would “punch her in her face,” and added obscenities. She said her husband recorded the conversation.

Monday 9/5

10:22 a.m. To Villa Dr. for a report of a theft. A man reported that someone entered his unlocked vehicle and took his cell phone, I-pod and two chargers. There are no suspects.

1:10 p.m. To Fenwick Dr. for a report of a domestic dispute. The deputy arrived to find a woman crying. She said that her sister came by to collect money. She said that when she told her sister that she could not pay her, the sister became upset and they argued. She said her sister then scratched her neck and punched her in the stomach. She said that she is two months pregnant and the sister is aware of that fact. The deputy went to the sister’s home and learned that she was at work in Springfield. Springfield PD was contacted, the sister was apprehended and charged with felony domestic violence.

8:38 p.m. To N. Church St. for a report of a burglary. A woman reported that she recently separated from her husband of two months. She said that when he moved out on August 26, he gave her his house key, and she believed that he took his belongings with him. She said he continued to harass and threaten her, so she filed for a protection order. Dispatch confirmed that the husband had not been served with the order yet. She said that she and her family were at a camping show and her husband followed her around. She said she left, and when she arrived home she found that her door opened easily. Once inside, she said that she noticed pictures of the two on her kitchen cabinet doors. She said that there was a message on her dry erase board that said “I love and miss you all.” Since they are still legally married and the protection order has not been served, it was unknown at the time if charges against the husband were applicable.

Tuesday 9/6

1:59 a.m. To Deerfield Dr. for a report of a domestic dispute. A man reported that his mother lives with him and his girlfriend. He said that they had a dispute over laundry and that the mother does not help around the home, and the mother told him to leave her alone, then called police. The mother said that her son had thrown laundry down the steps into the path she uses to go to the bathroom, so she threw them back up the stairs. She said that her son began yelling about things that needed to be done around the home, but that weren’t her responsibility. The son said that his mother is used to living alone and has been complaining about how he, his girlfriend and their five kids are living. All parties agreed that they would be fine for the rest of the night.

1:35 p.m. To W. Jefferson St. for a report of a found item. A man reported finding a GPS unit behind his vehicle. It was not reported stolen, and was submitted into property.

7:47 p.m. To Hartley Dr. for a report of a theft. A woman reported that sometime overnight someone took the license plates off of her vehicle.

Wednesday 9/7

8:17 a.m. To Brubaker Dr. for a report of an unwanted guest. The deputy could not get an answer at the door, so she went in and found no one home. She went to the apartment manager who said that the RP came to her claiming that a man was wearing a mask and got into her apartment. The manager said that the RP has been claiming that the man has been coming into her apartment and has been staring at her through the window. The deputy finally contacted the RP who said that the man came into her home this morning and dumped white stuff in her kid’s bedroom. The deputy stated that she saw no white stuff in the bedroom.

9:24 a.m. To N. Main St. for a report of vandalism. A man reported that when he arrived at work he found the tires on the driver’s side of the business vehicle had been slashed. There are no suspects.

5:28 p.m. To Bellows Dr. A woman reported that her father was making negative Facebook posts which she believed were directed toward her but did not mention her. She was advised that having a negative opinion about a person is not illegal. The deputy viewed the posts and did not observe any menacing comments. She asked that the incident be documented.

Thursday 9/8

11:10 a.m. To S. Union Rd. A woman reported that a small child was by the roadway and was unsupervised, then went back into a residence. She asked that a deputy check on the child’s welfare. The child’s father said that his 2-year-old son was eating and he went to use the restroom. He said that he then came out to find his son out front talking with a woman. He said that the doors were locked, and that he was unaware that his son could unlock the door. The RP reported that she was traveling north on Union Rd. when she saw a woman talking with a small child near the roadway. She said that they were with the child for about 5-10 minutes when a man started yelling for the child. The prosecutor’s office was contacted and requested all videos, statements and a report be forwarded to them for a decision.

7:21 p.m. To Coachhill Ln. for a report of a neighbor dispute. A woman reported that there are two children in the neighborhood who bully her son and harass her by calling her names. She said they act as if they want her to say something in response so they can get her in trouble. The boys were contacted and they said they were riding their bikes when the woman began saying things to them. They said they said things in return. All parties were advised not to interact with one another.

Friday 9/9

7:27 a.m. To Sunrise Terrace. A woman wanted to ask questions about her life alert. The deputy arrived to find the woman sitting on the floor wearing only a top. She said she had been on the floor last night. Her left leg was in an unnatural position, so a squad was summoned. She was asked basic questions and gave the correct answer on the first try. She was transported to Springfield Regional Medical Center.

9:36 a.m. To S. Dayton-Lakeview Rd. for a report of a theft. A woman reported that her vehicle had been stolen. She said that the vehicle had been paid off for years. She said that she would prosecute the thief. Dispatch checked the repo file and found that the vehicle had been repossessed. The RP was given the repo company information.

1:43 p.m. To S. Dayton-Lakeview Rd. for a report of a theft. A man reported that someone stole his dog two days ago. He said he parked his vehicle, set the dog on the ground, gathered property from the vehicle and the dog was gone. He said that he went back to the breeder and got another dog from the same litter. He was advised to contact the Humane Society in case the dog just walked off and was turned in.

1:48 p.m. To Milton-Carlisle Rd. for a report of a man slumped over sitting on the front porch. The RP said she had been by the residence twice on separate occasions and saw the subject in the same position. Bethel Twp. EMS was called and determined that the subject had passed away.

3:54 p.m. To N. Main St. for a report of a theft. A man reported that he was at the business and left his wallet by the cash register. He said that when he returned, the wallet was gone. A store employee viewed video surveillance and it showed a man picking up the wallet and putting it in his pocket. She said that he paid with a credit card and a free meal card that was mailed to him. She checked further and found that the card was mailed to the suspect at his home in Quincy, Ohio. The suspect was contacted by phone and said that he did not take the wallet. He checked his pocket and found that he had the wallet, and said he must have taken it by mistake. He said he checked his wallet and found $127 in cash. The RP said that the wallet had $280 in cash. The suspect was adamant that he took nothing from the wallet. He was advised to take the wallet to the public safety building as soon as possible. He was advised that the RP would be contacted tomorrow to see if he wished to press charges.

4:35 p.m. To Smith Park for a report of a possible drug overdose. A woman reported that her son had passed out in the back seat of her vehicle. He was unresponsive and had a weak pulse. Deputies pulled the son from the vehicle and he was still unresponsive. She said that he has a history of drug usage, but didn’t know if he had used today because she had just picked him up from work. The subject became responsive after two doses of Narcan. He denied using drugs and said he didn’t know what had happened. New Carlisle Medics observed a fresh needle mark on his arm and it appeared that he had recently shot up. The son said that the mark was from when he was treated at the hospital a few days ago. He was taken to Huber ER. The woman said that there was another man with them, and he left before deputies arrived stating that he had outstanding warrants.

10:02 p.m. To W. National Rd. for a report of a man and woman arguing. A man who answered the door said everything was OK. A woman in the residence confirmed that the couple were only arguing over money. There was no evidence of physical activity and the home was neat and in order.

Saturday 9/10

4:44 a.m. To Glenapple Dr. for a report of found property. A man reported that he found a bike in the ditch on Styer Dr. He said he put it in his car and brought it home so no one would steal it. The bike had not been reported stolen. It was tagged for pickup to be submitted to property.

5:20 p.m. To Addison-Carlisle Rd. for a report of a theft. A man reported that sometime between Wednesday and Friday, someone stole a lawn mower, two weed-eaters, 3 pop-up canopies and a bench from his shed. He said that whoever stole the items was leaking fluid from their vehicle because there are two drip trails in his driveway. There are no suspects.

7:42 p.m. To Steven Circle for a report of a domestic disturbance. A woman, who was visibly upset, reported that she and her husband were discussing their business and how he thought one of his workers was stealing money. She said they were arguing about the money and how he was having an affair with another employee. She said he became enraged and attacked her. She said he dragged her into the kitchen and slammed her head into the sink, then banged her hand into the sink and knocked her to the ground and continued to bang her head. The husband said that they were arguing about money, and that was it. He was questioned further and said that she got into his face and he pushed her away. The wife had injuries consistent with her story and she filled out a statement. The husband was charged with domestic violence and assault. He has two prior domestic convictions causing this charge to be a felony.


Bethel Township (Miami Co.) Sheriff Reports

Friday 9/9

12:36 p.m. Littering in the 8700 block of Sullivan Road. RP discovered a large amount of trash on the outskirts of the property. Deputy observed the trash, which filled a small dump truck, consisting of pieces of furniture and regular household garbage. Deputy was able to collect some mail with the same address and four different names listed. The RP has no place to keep the trash so it will be hauled to an incinerator. A receipt for the cost to dispose will be provided to the deputy investigating this case.

6:32 p.m. Dispute in the 6600 block of Ross Road. RP reported a female had come onto her property to retrieve her son. RP said the female began cursing in front of children and then left the property. RP wanted the female trespassed from the property. Deputy contacted the female and she said there had been drama between her and the RP. Female requested that a neutral place be set for child exchange. She was told that she had been trespassed from the property. Both parties were advised to contact their civil attorneys to draw up a plan for child exchanges.

9:00 p.m. Theft not in progress in the 7500 block of S. Dayton Brandt Road. Undisclosed items removed the property.

Sunday 9/11

6:00 p.m. Disturbance in the 6600 block of Bethelville Drive. RP stated his ex-girlfriend came by his house to retrieve items their children had left at his house. An argument ensued over the RP’s new girlfriend. He stated there were no verbal threats made by the ex-girlfriend but she caused a scene and wished to have the incident documented.

8:05 p.m. Disturbance reported at A and R Reck MHP. 4220 US Route 40. Deputies reported to the MHP on a stabbing. The suspect left in a white Chrysler heading east on US 40. Also reported to dispatch was another vehicle that left the scene and it was a white truck. A deputy was in the area and was able to located the truck on Dinsmore. He briefly spoke with the female who advised Edward E. Shoffner stabbed a male and he was still in the trailer. Since the stabbing victim was still in the trailer and squad was staging until they knew it was safe to respond, the deputy had to respond to the scene. Upon arrival the victim exited onto the front porch. He was holding a rag over his stomach and it was covered in blood. The victim was asked to remove the rag and the deputy did find an obvious puncture wound to the victim’s upper stomach area. Victim stated he had been outside on the porch when Shoffner arrived and was arguing with a female. The victim said at one point he smiled and Shoffner said something along the lines of you think it’s funny why don’t you come down here. The victim said he left the porch and walked towards Shoffner and told him he wasn’t laughing at him. Shoffner approached the victim who thought he had been punched in the stomach. He said when he backed up he felt something wet on his shirt and saw the blood. Shoffner then took off in the Chrysler. A witness said he had been inside the trailer at the time it occurred and didn’t know anything other than the victim had been stabbed. A BOLO was placed for Edward Shoffner. On Sept 14 Shoffner was found, arrested, charged with Felonious Assault and incarcerated.

Monday 9/12

10:22 a.m. Criminal damage in the 6000 block of Studebaker Road. A mailbox was damaged and there are no suspects or leads at this time.

1:42 p.m. Theft not in progress at Bethel High School. 7490 S. State Route 201. Father called to report his daughter’s cell phone was stolen on or around 9/9/16 while at Bethel High School. The phone was returned on 9/12/16 by the suspect.

Tuesday 9/13

8:55 p.m. Assist squad at Bergies Drive Thru, 6920 US Route 40. Deputy responded to location on the report of a man bleeding from the head. The male attempted to run as the Deputy arrived on scene. The male was taken to the ground and detained by handcuffing behind the back. It was believed the male was suffering from sort of mental episode and appeared to be hallucinating. Bethel Squad responded and transported the male to an area hospital.

Wednesday 9/15

00:46 a.m. Traffic stop for speeding in the area of Studebaker Rd and S. State Route 202. Contact was made with the driver, identified as Amanda Short. After further investigation Short was found to be under the influence of alcohol and taken into custody for OVI.
