Sunday 2/26

7:30 a.m. Two Polaris ATV’s dumped in the area of S. State Route 202 and E. State Route 571. Deputy found one ATV parked along the south shoulder, approximately 30 feet east from the intersection at State Route 202. The second was found on its side in the middle of the roadway. Both ATVs appeared to have fallen off a trailer or truck bed and neither appeared to be in working order. The VIN was run on the first ATV and returned to a male in Tipp City. Deputy spoke with him over the phone and found the ATV had been sold about three years prior on Craigslist. The male couldn’t remember who he had sold it to. The second ATV had a return to a farm in the 4500 block of S. State Route 202. Both ATVs were towed to the Miami County Training Center. Deputy then responded to the State Route 202 farm and spoke with a male who was found to be the owner of both ATVs. He said he stored them at a neighboring farm. Deputy followed the male to this farm and noticed bolt cutters on the ground. Also found was a truck with tool cabinets in the bed. Two of the four cabinets were wide open, suggesting someone had gone through them. The male stated that ratchet straps were used to keep them shut and the straps and been cut off. The driver’s side door key hole had also been drilled out but subject(s) were unsuccessful in making entry. Also found was a black sock and camo glove that were collected for evidence. After walking the property, the deputy saw a large white tractor trailer that was locked. It appeared that someone attempted to use bolt cutters on the lock but was unsuccessful at that attempt. Male was able to provide a Scandisk from a trail cam mounted in the area that might have caught the unknown subject(s). While on the scene the deputy also recovered a partial piece of what appeared to be a grey seat belt laying by the tractor trailer steps. On Feb 28 the deputy was informed by detectives that one of the seat belts had been cut out of Christopher Chaffman’s truck that had been impounded. On Feb. 28 Christopher Chaffman was interviewed and admitted to his involvement in this theft incident.
