A retirement party in the Bethel gymnasium surprised recently retired Bethel Band Director Danny Elam on Friday, June 10. Approximately 300 former students, co-educators, community members, and family came out to support Elam and waited in darkened silence for his entrance.

Lesley Tipton and Angela Spivey planned the surprise party over the last month. After having had shoulder surgery four days prior to the event, the former band director was prevented prevented from driving himself. Construction at the school also helped to facilitate the ruse as a neutral parking lot was arranged for continued secrecy. Most of the guests worn pre-purchased green t-shirts that read “Mr. Elam’s Opus 2016, The Pride of Bethel.” According to Spivey, his expression of shock and his joy throughout the event was a gratifying culmination of the work done in preparation for the event. Elam stood dumbfounded in the doorway of the gymnasium during a standing ovation that lasted several minutes after his entrance.

Friends and family were delighted by the opportunity to honor the Bethel director’s 29-year legacy. Master of Ceremonies and former Elam disciple, Justin Spivey, opened the event for Elam’s son Mitchell. Mitchell thanked the community for being supportive of their family when his brother David was killed in an accident over a year ago. Mitchell was followed by a long line of former students, parents, and coworkers who had been touched by Elam’s influence. Words used to describe Elam throughout the evening included: dedicated, patient, caring, funny, talented, encouraging, hardworking, expecting excellence, etc. One person said Elam was leaving “big shoes to fill.” Another said that he encouraged his pupils to “reach for higher standards and because he did, they did.”

The evening included vocal performances of “Stand by Your Man” by Bobbi Jo Meyers, “Glorious” by Lesley Tipton, “Yesterday” by Ben Tipton, “Hero” by Bethel graduates Erika Noble and Tyler Wessel, a comic version of “Danny Boy” by Scott Lawson, and “In My Life” by former and recent student choir members. Retired teacher, Mr. Manning presented his own “Top 10 Reasons Why Mr. E. is Really Retiring”. A comedy skit “A Day in the Life,” starring graduate Coleman Clark as Mr. Elam, had the audience rolling with laughter in the bleachers.

In addition to a demonstration of the musical gifts Elam had nurtured in his students over the years, he was presented with financial gifts from students, family, fellow teachers, and the community. Contributions were designated for a luxury cruise for Elam and his wife Tammy in honor of his retirement. Attendees had the opportunity to sign a quilt and guestbook as a memento.

Elam was speechless with the outpouring of love received throughout the evening. Students, parents, family and friends were thrilled with the show of support from the community in celebration of an influential educator’s career.
