coin scholarship

Meredith Johnson, a senior at Northwestern High School has been awarded a $500 scholarship from the Clark County Coin Club.

To qualify, students were to write an essay outlining their thoughts on coin or currency related topics. Johnson’s winning essay was titled “Coining – A Hobby.”

She said her interest in coin collecting began at age 8 when her father brought home a “Fifty State Quarters Handbook and Coin Album.” She wrote that it was intended to be an activity for the both of them.

“This was the beginning of a long, yet stimulating process,” wrote Johnson.

She said she lost interest for a few years, then resumed her hobby in earnest in her sophomore year. She searched for her lost Quarters handbook and album. When she found it, she also found a note from her late grandmother.

“Tears welled up in my eyes,” Johnson wrote.
