The Northwestern Local Schools (NWLS) Board of Education (BOE) took a look at the district’s five-year financial forecast and other concerns when they met on May 19 in the Northwestern Elementary Library.

The meeting opened with Sharon Saunders sharing several suggested textbook changes for the upcoming school year. The changes were recommended by teacher teams and are in keeping with Ohio’s academic standards. Recommended changes include a new AP Chemistry book, and some Business curriculum.

NWLS District Treasurer, David Bollheimer, walked BOE members through the district’s five-year financial forecast. The forecast is an estimate of income and expenditures the district can expect to see in the next five years. Bollheimer says in four years the district could possibly see a drop in revenue and needs to look forward and be prepared in case that happens. “However, this is just a forecast,” says Bollheimer, “We know that things can, and will, change.”

The BOE voted to renew the district’s membership into the Ohio School Athletic Association. They also approved the list of NWLS Seniors petitioning to graduate on May 26, 2016. The ceremony will take place at 7:00pm in the HPER Center at Wittenberg University.

A number of donations were accepted by the BOE. The Springfield Golf Association donated $3,832 to the NWLS Golf program. The Northwestern Athletic Boosters made its third donation of $10,000 for the NWLS Tennis courts, as well as a donation of $480 for trees at the Jr/Sr. High School on behalf of the Tennis team.

BOE members voted to approve overnight trips for students competing in the “Power of the Pen” competition in Wooster, Ohio and for students competing in the National FCCLA Competition in San Diego, California. A proposal from Ohio Valley Medical Center to provide athletic training to NWLS athletes was approved. Authority was also granted to enter into educational contracts with the Madison/Champaign Educational Service Center for the 2017 fiscal year.

A number of personnel changes were authorized, including the movement of Mr. Luke Everhart into the position of Elementary School Principal upon the resignation of Ms. Danielle Romine on June 30, 2016.

The regular meeting closed with a facilities update from NWLS Superintendent, Jesse Steiner. Steiner gave BOE members a re-cap of the discussion that took place at a NWLS town hall meeting on May 18. The town hall meeting was used to update the community on the status of the NWLS building project and to get community feedback on what steps the district should take as it nears the end of the project.

The next regular NWLS BOE meeting will take place in the Elementary School library on June 16, 2016 at 6:00pm.
