It was the two headed monster of Matt Gump and Conner McClure that ultimately did in the Tecumseh Arrows last week, as they traveled to Bellefontaine for a conference matchup. Both players scored 17 points, to nearly outscore the Arrows by themselves, as they defeated Tecumseh 49-36 on the road. Tecumseh was led in scoring by Jordan Gozelski with eight points, while sophomore Dalton Davis added seven. It didn't take Gump long to start his barrage on the night, hitting a three right out of the gate. The two teams battled for the first four minutes of the period, as Trent Mead and Davis scored to keep the game tied at five.  Then it was McClure's turn, connecting on consecutive three's to push the Bellefontaine lead out to 11-5 before Mead could break the string with a layup. After closing the game to 11-7, the Arrows would not score the rest of the period, allowing Gump and McClure to do more damage, and take a 15-7 lead into the second period. McClure ran off five more points to start the second period, and increase the Chiefs lead to 20-7. The Arrows offense was struggling to keep up with the home teams', as they only scored four free throws in the quarter. Mead and Gabe Winans-Berner each hit a pair from the line, but it was Gump who took over the game for the Chiefs. After Berner hit two free throws to make it 21-11, Gump then hit consecutive three's and a driving layup to end the half, and when the dust had settled, Bellefontaine enjoyed a 30-11 lead. Tecumseh didn't stop fighting in the third quarter, as Scott Snarr and Davis came out and closed the gap to 15 midway through the period. The Arrows outscored the Chiefs in those eight minutes, and was working to try to make the game obtainable heading to the fourth. Tecumseh did close the gap to 13 points midway through the quarter, as Gozelski and Mead scored to make it 36-23, but McClure did it again, scoring four points in the final two minutes, and Tecumseh trailed by 17 after three. Gozelski scored on a short jumper and Morgan Clark hit a three midway through the fourth to make it a 12-point game, but the Arrows could draw no closer, falling 49-36. * Also last week, the Arrows sent a wave through the Greater Western Ohio Conference, knocking off Northmont 53-50, and sending the T-Bolts down to only their second loss of the season. Tecumseh led 24-20 after 16 minutes, but in the second half, it would prove to be quite a battle. The game was tied heading into the fourth, and some big free throws in the final eight minutes would propel them to victory. Chase Culbertson led the Arrows with 19 points, including 8-10 from the line. Berner added 15 and Mead scored eight. Tecumseh (4-3) returns to action against Shawnee on Friday night, after playing Springfield in a game last night. Comments (0) |
