For three quarters, the Tecumseh boys basketball team struggled against the Tippecanoe Red Devils in a Central Buckeye Conference game.
Fortunately for the Arrows, they still had the fourth period, and what an eight minutes it was. Tecumseh turned a six-point deficit heading to the final period, into a 14-0 run to start the fourth, en route to a key 52-47 win over the Red Devils on Friday night at Tippecanoe High School. "The kids were gutsy tonight, and came back for the big win," Tecumseh coach Roger Culbertson said. "This was a huge game for the league, that puts Tipp two games back, and this was sort of their last chance to hang on." Tecumseh found themselves trailing 29-21 at the half, but fought through a rough third period, and came storming back in the fourth. "We could have folded at halftime," Culbertson said. "The kids responded, and we chanced our game at halftime. We became more aggressive and the full court press bothered them. We found a way tonight." Tipp City came out on fire, hitting everything it seemed they shot. Before anyone knew what hit them, Tipp led 6-1, and 8-4 before the Arrows came back. A running layup by Scott Snarr, and following three from Chase Culbertson gave Tecumseh their first lead of the game, but just that quickly, as Jacob Hall buried a three, and two scores from Cameron Johnson closed out the first quarter, as Tipp led 15-11. The Red Devils maintained their lead through the second period of play, which saw them take a 29-18 lead toward the end of the first half. Chase Culbertson hit a clutch three as the first half expired, sending Tecumseh into the lockerroom only trailing by eight at the half. The third quarter saw the Arrows fight back, but could never get the lead. Six times Tecumseh cut their deficit to only four points, and each time, the Red Devils answered. Gabe Winans-Berner twice closed the gap to two, but Tipp pulled back away. A 4-0 run to end the quarter was nothing compared to what was about to happen. A pair of free throws from Trent Mead started an incredible run that saw Tipp go 6:23 without a point. Meanwhile, the Arrows started pulling away. A layup by Snarr gave the Arrows their first lead since the first quarter, and that was followed by a three from Culbertson, and enduing Mead layup. After Tipp missed the bonus, it was Codi Frank who put the Arrows up 45-37. Tipp tried to come back, but they couldn't close the game any closer than five points when Sean Ford hit a three, but the Arrows (9-3, 5-1) escaped. Mead led Tecumseh with 19 while Culbertson added 13. Johnson led Tipp with 12. "Our first goal is to win the league, and not worry about down the line at the tournament" Roger Culbertson said. "These kids came out passive and they just need to believe in themselves."
