After their abysmal performance at Bellefontaine last week, it was a must win for the Tecumseh Lady Arrows, trying to regain the confidence heading into the post season.
Thanks to a much better complete effort, the Lady Arrows bounced back with a 54-46 win over Northwestern last week, as the celebrated Senior Night for their lone senior, Allison Denton. “This was a nice win for them,” said Tecumseh coach Danielle Thomas. “We now have six wins, which is more than we had my first year here (five). It was a good program win, hopefully it can take us over the hump.” Tecumseh (6-11, 5-8) opened with a 9-3 run, as four different players contributed early. Sophomore Chelsea Davis scored seven points in the first period, matching the Northwestern team total, as the Lady Arrows led 14-7 after one quarter. The Lady Arrows came out on a fast run to open the second, scoring the first six points, as Quisenberry contributed three and Tecumseh was in command 20-7. Another basket by Davis made it 22-9 before the Warriors came back. They scored the next nine points, and the Lady Arrows lead was cut to 22-18. But the Lady Arrows defense tightened, scoring the final five points of the half, including a buzzer-beating three-pointer from freshman Brittany Frappier to give Tecumseh a 27-18 halftime advantage. “Chelsea played hard tonight, and she gave a great effort,” Thomas said. “Our gameplan coming in was to control the boards and not give them second shots.” Northwestern battled through the third quarter, keeping the game within reach. They trailed by eight points with 3:20 left in the period, but outscored the Lady Arrows 4-0 in the final two minutes to close the game to 31-27 heading to the fourth. Tecumseh was held to only fourth points in the period. In the final eight minutes, the Lady Arrows used 16 points from Quisenberry, and hit five free throws in the final minute to preserve the win. During the final eight minutes, Tecumseh pushed their lead to 15 points with 2:53 left, but the Lady Warriors would not go away. They outscored the Lady Arrows 12-5 in the final two minutes, but it was too late, as the Lady Arrows escaped with the win. “It was a quiet 26 for Bianca, and we had some key points from other kids tonight,” Thomas said. “She went to the basket a lot more in the second half.” “We had the chance to work on some situational things as we get closer to the tournament. After the Bellefontaine game, we know we can’t take anyone lightly. It’s anyones game for whoever shows up. You have to go out every night.” The Lady Arrows now play at Graham Wednesday, then travel to Kenton Ridge on Saturday. Tecumseh (54)- Collins 3, Davis 14, Denton 2, Frappier 7, Quisenberry 26, Steinbrunner 3. Total 54. Northwestern (46)- Bruner 10, Byrum 8, Demeter 5, Gray 6, Korab 8, Leep 6, Lemley 1, Seitz 2.
