The key for any team is to improve every season. For the Tecumseh Volleyball team, they are no exception. Coach Michelle Smith is very optimistic for what she has seen in the pre-season so far, as the Lady Arrows, led by seven returning letter winners, look to begin their season in ten days.
“We should be very competitive this season, and I really think we will be at the top of the league,” Smith said, as her team prepared recently for a practice. “Another of our big goals this year is to get out of sectionals.” In order to do that, the Lady Arrows will be relying on five key upperclassmen and three talented younger players to lead the way to success. Two seniors lead the way for Tecumseh this year, including Molly Fiorita, who moves over to the outside hitter from the right side where she played in the past. “She has been showing a lot of improvement this summer in both the weight room and conditioning,” Smith said. “Molly is a key, solid hitter for us.” Joining her in the class of 2011 will be Erika Holt, another outside hitter for the Lady Arrows. “Erika will be a key leader for us this year,” Smith said of her senior. “She has been coming on strong for us, and we will count on her open court shot selection to be solid for us. Her and Molly are two good senior leaders for us.” Another key position will be the setter spot, and that goes to junior Alli Collins, up from the junior varsity team last year. Smith is counting on Collins to lead a faster offense for the Lady Arrows this year, as they try to speed up the play over last year. The most decorated player returning is three-year starter and returning all-league player Chelsey Davis. The middle hitter will be a key part to the success of the team. “She is very important for our team, and she needs to stay focused this season on having a great year for us,” Smith said. “She is a very good leader, and can put down some big hits. She is a well rounded player.” Also junior Amanda George will return as a defensive specialist for the Lady Arrows. “Amanda has really gotten stronger and faster this summer, and is quicker to the ball,” Smith said. “She will be very key in the back row for us, and is the defensive leader.” One big loss the Lady Arrows have suffered is junior Miranda Mougey, who suffered a season-ending injury recently with an ACL injury. Three sophomores will provide strong talent for Tecumseh, including Megan Christmann, Bianca Quiseberry and Jennifer Vlasic. Christmann is a returning middle hitter, and according to Smith, her blocking has improved, and will be a force in the conference. Quisenberry will play the libero position, and is expected to be one of the most consistent players for Tecumseh. Vlasic will play the right side hitter, and will also be an impact on defense. “The girls had a good summer, and we are looking forward to the start of the season,” Smith said, who said the team has a successful Ohio State team camp also earlier in the summer. “We hope to throw some things at some teams this year, and surprise them.” Also on the squad will be swing players Taylor Jones and Jordan Fox. Tecumseh opens the season at Troy on August 28.
