With all due respect to the “regulars” who attend all of the Bethel girls basketball games (i.e. parents, family, boyfriends, ect), if the rest of the Bethel basketball fans only make it to one girls hoops game this year, I strongly encourage you to attend this Monday night (Feb. 7) at the Beehive. The reason? Simply put…the best is coming to town. Spring Valley Academy (21-1) was added to the schedule late. And if you have never heard of the school, it is normal. They are a Seventh-Day Adventist school in the southern Miami Valley. They are not an Ohio High School Athletic Association sanctioned school, but do play a handful of OHSAA teams during the season. Oh yeah, and they have Andrea Hoover. You may not remember much about the school when you leave, but odds are, you will remember Hoover. The 5-foot-9 guard is the best female basketball player in the greater Dayton area in the senior class, and not only because she is tied with Tecumseh sophomore Bianca Quisenberry for the area scoring lead. She can do so much else. Along with her 28 point per game average, are nearly 14 rebounds per game. Last weekend, Hoover and her squad were in a tournament in Texas, and in the final game, she scored 49 points with 18 rebounds and five blocked shots. Her team won the game 57-44 over Spencerville Adventist Academy, and she was the whole show. Now normally, she will get some help from another double figures scorer. But for fans, her stats look to be amazing. In addition to her scoring and rebounding, she is averaging 5.7 assists, 3.8 blocks, 5.2 steals per game, while shooting 50 percent from the field, 35 percent from the three-point line, and 84 percent from the foul line. Against two area sanctioned schools, she had 48 points against Stivers, and 37 against Dayton Dunbar. Numbers aside, she is just a fun player to watch. Area fans will get to see her for the next four years, as she has received a scholarship to the University of Dayton. Players like this don’t come along every day. She is a player that is worth the price of admission to see, and while the boys game always gets a lot of publicity, she can certainly draw a crowd to watch her play. Yes, there have been games where Hoover was held in check, scoring below double figures twice this season. I won’t guarantee she will score a lot that specific night, but she will be a player who has all the tools of a “next level” player. And Bees fans get the privilege Monday night of watching number 24. Comments (0) |
