SPRINGFIELD - Despite the early season weather, the Bethel Bees track team competed in the Northwestern track event, as the Bees competed with the host Warriors, Urbana and Miami East.
On the boys side, Jordan Holtvogt claimed both the 100 and 200 meter dash titles. He ran the 100 in 11.75, and edging Darnyl Smith from Urbana by .11 seconds. Troy Sawyer was tenth in the event, as the Bethel freshman finished in 13.00. In the 200 meter dash, Holtvogt ran a 23.47, just beating Tanner Lawrence from Urbana. Bethel Will Gresham was eighth running a 26.50. Zach Ulrich was sixth in the 400 meter run, finishing the event in 1:00.42, while Bethel had two placers in the 800, as Ronnie Picard placed third (2:30.93) and Justin Haines was fifth overall, with a time of 2:34.51. Finishing third in the 1600 was Aaron Reed, who ran a 5:23.78. Picard just missed earning team points, with a sixth place finish. Reed also was third in the 3200, four seconds behind the winner. His time of 11:40.05 earned Bethel three team points. In the 110 hurdles, Cameron Keough placed third (17.98), barely falling behind second place Timmy Melvin of Urbana. He also placed fourth in the 300 hurdles with a time of 47.75. Teammate Gresham also earned points by placing fifth overall. The Bees relay teams also were successful. The 4x200 team won the event with a time of 1:38.24, and in the 4x400, the Bees also placed first with a time of 3:46.71. Also finishing third in the 4x100 were the Bees with a time of 49.75. The field events proved to be successful for the Bees, as Scott Poffenberger won both the shot put (43-feet, 4-inches) and the discus (120-feet, 8-inches). Also placing second in the high jump was the Bees’ Jacob Tumey (5-feet, 10-inches), and Derreck Diddle was fourth (5-feet, 4-inches). Tumey was also third in the long jump (17-feet, 3-inches). For the girls, Maddie Ellerbrock placed second in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:43.39, and finished second in the 1600 (6:05.69). Savannah Diddle placed fourth in the 100 hurdles, with a time of 19.68, and finished third in the 300 hurdles (55.75). Winning in the junior high race for Bethel girls were Brianna Baker in both the 100 and 200 meter dash, while earning second place finishes included Lytia Hart in the 400, Jillian Callaham in the 1600, Tia Koewler in the 200, and all three relay teams. The junior high boys also had several strong performances, including second-place finishers Devin Hazley in the 100 (14.17), Brady Bowman in the 400 (1:03.54), Josh Burrows in the 110 hurdles (21.12), and the 4x200 relay team.
