After making a trip into the district finals last season, the Bethel Lady Bees are looking to another shot to get back to that level. Even though three key players are gone from that team, coach Ed Quincel likes what he has seen so far halfway through the pre-season, as the Lady Bees prepare for their season opener Nov. 27 at National Trail.
“Those three seniors (Brittany Lewis, Kylie Kopp and Carrie Clendening) are big shoes to fill,” Quincel said last weekend. “We have some work to do to get there. We are asking the underclassmen to fill those roles, and they haven’t had much floor time yet to be able to do that.” While Bethel won 17 games last season, it is time to look ahead according to Quincel, and he will do that with some solid players, including some who have shined in the early part of the pre-season. “The key is for these kids to keep up the intensity and energy level,” Quincel said. “What we saw last year was not the most talented team, but they worked harder than anybody down to the last second. These kids are starting to develop that same intensity.” Quincel also agrees that the success earned from this program last year will have an effect on those who are back this year. “It definitely does carry over,” he said. “We have established a good program, and have set goals. These girls need to get hungrier for the next goal.” “We haven’t had this kind on intensity at Bethel for a while now, and they have high expectations.” In addition to returning one of the league’s top players in senior Emily Ellerbrock, Quincel had been impressed with others so far in the pre-season. “Mercedes Nelson (junior) has stepped up so far for us,” he said. “She has developed a nice post game from last year, and is strong with the basketball. She is further along than what I thought.” “Also, sophomore Krista Burchett is showing a lot of solid intensity, and so far is the most physical player on the team, even though she is smaller.” Even though Quincel is pleased with the quarters they have played so far in the pre-season, he knows that this group will have to work very hard to continue the success. “We have three seniors who have been very helpful with the younger kids, and are leading by example.” Quincel said. “They are also showing strong leadership off the court also.” Even with the hard work of the seniors Ellerbrock, Kendall Banks and Brooke Cornet, the Lady Bees still have work to do before facing National Trail next weekend. “We have to step up our ball security, and get into our offense,” Quincel said. “We need to get people where they need to be.” Next week in the New Carlisle News, the season preview for the Lady Bees, as we head into the start of the new season.
