It was almost like somebody turned a switch on. After three periods, the Bethel Bees were struggling to figure out a way to defeat league foe Covington. They trailed by four headed into the fourth period.
In the final eight minutes, there was a different look on the floor, and the Bees dominated the final period to knock off the Buccs 48-45 to win a huge Cross County Conference game at the Beehive. “We stepped up and hit some big shots, and in the end, the turnovers were the difference,” Bethel coach Rick Hickman said. Covington committed seven turnovers in the first three periods combined, but in the fourth period alone, they had eight. “The kids stepped up and kept them out of the paint in the second half,” he added. Bethel (6-0 overall, 5-1 CCC) jumped in front quickly 7-0 in the first two minutes, as they established a lead early. After a three from Eric Beckstedt, the Bees had a pair of layups from Grant Samuel to push their lead to 11-3, forcing Covington to take the timeout. Bethel led 14-5 with 3:14 left in the first quarter when Beckstedt brought the Buccs back. He hit consecutive three-pointers to cut the Bethel lead to 14-13 before Scott Masin broke the string with a layup. Bethel took a one-point lead into the second period. Covington controlled the early part of the second quarter, as they turned a 21-16 deficit into a lead. After Michael James scored to give the Bees the five point lead, Covington hit three consecutive three-point shots, two more from Beckstedt, giving the Buccs a 25-21 lead. A late basket from James brought Bethel back, but Ben Christian scored near the first half buzzer, and the Buccs led 29-25 at the half. The third quarter was a defensive struggle, as neither team did much on the offensive end. Each team scored five points in the period, as Covington saw their lead grow to 34-28 with 3:00 left in the period, but a layup from Masin closed the Buccs lead to four entering the fourth. Bethel came out like a different team in the fourth. They scored the first four points to open the period, and tied the contest at 34. After a three-pointer by the Buccs, Bethel shut down the Covington offense over the next six minutes and took the game over. Ben Schwieterman hit a three at the 6:46 mark of the fourth, giving Bethel the lead for good. The Bees outscored Covington 12-0 over the stretch, to enjoy a 46-37 lead with 2:45 left. Masin led Bethel with 19 points and 11 rebounds, had three steals and four blocks. Samuel and James each added 10 while Jon Sutton dished out six assists. Beckstedt led all scorers for Covington with 21 points. Bethel now travels to Vandalia Butler for a non-league contest on January 9, starting at 7:30 |
