It happened so fast, nobody saw it coming.  But once the Miami Valley Rays plated four runs in the opening inning, it opened the flood gates en route to a 9-3 victory over the New Carlisle Knights in a Roy Hobbs League game last week.

The Knights were the visiting team at Gastineau Field, and was on the verge of scoring first in the game.  With two outs, Steve Harsman walked and Howard Wooten reached on an error, but it was Bob Alexander who popped out to the shortstop to end the threat, and leave two runners on base.

Meanwhile, the Rays took advantage of their opportunities and put the first runs on the board.  An opening single from Jay Sage opened the inning, and after he stole second and moved to third on a throwing error, Tom Madigan walked.  Madigan was then caught off of first base, and during the rundown, Sage came into score giving the Rays a 1-0 lead.
Two more walks and an infield single loaded the bases, and Dennis Dice ripped a two-run single making it 3-0.  The next batter was Josh Jackson and he had an RBI single, and when the dust had settled, the Rays led early 4-0.
The Knights put a small dent into their deficit in the second, when Shawn Cobb walked with two outs, and scored when Adam Love lined a double to the wall, making it 4-1.
But the Rays got that run back and added another in their half of the second.  After a pair of walks, Marc Smith had a run scoring single for the Rays.
Trailing 6-1, the Knights came back in the third.  With one out, Dave Ridener singled, and moved up on a bunt single by Jason Love.  Following a sacrifice, Wooten knocked in both runners with a single, making it 6-3.
Another run scored in the bottom of the third for the Rays, when Jeff Louderback drove in a run.  An inning later, the Rays went back to work.
After the Knights left the bases loaded, the Rays scores with two outs and nothing happening.  Three consecutive walks loaded the bases, and Josh Jackson knocked in a run to make it 8-3.
From that point, the Knight offense was done.  They only put three runners on base the rest of the game, and none in scoring position.  The Rays capped the scoring in the fifth, when a sacrifice fly scored Louderback.
With the loss, the Knights fall to 1-6 on the season.  They play the Mudcats at 6:30 on Wednesday night, then return to the field Sunday at 1 p.m. against the Colts at 1 p.m.
* The Knights have announced they will be having an open pitching tryout this Saturday, June 26 at Gastineau Field at noon.
